Domains of Dread
The Domains of Dread are fragments of twisted reality adrift in a far-flung, forgotten corner of the Shadowfell, where the plane’s natural gloom gives way to something far darker and more insidious. Each domain is a pocket dimension, shaped by the fears, obsessions, and torments of its ruler—a being known as a Darklord. Though varied in form, all Domains of Dread are steeped in horror, bound by inescapable borders, and suffused with the malevolent will of the mists that surround them.
The Domains of Dread are not just prisons for Darklords, but theaters of fear, designed to challenge and unsettle any who enter. They are living nightmares, reflections of personal damnation, and tests of moral and spiritual resilience. Adventurers who enter may seek to unravel the mystery of the domain, defeat its horrors, or even confront the Darklord—but few ever leave unchanged.
In the end, the Domains of Dread serve as cautionary tales, warnings wrapped in shadow, where the worst truths of the soul are given form, and redemption is as elusive as escape.
Geography
Unlike the gray bleakness of the greater Shadowfell, the Domains of Dread are intensely atmospheric, often resembling warped versions of the Material Plane. Gothic cities, haunted forests, crumbling castles, fog-choked moors, and ancient ruins populate these realms—but always in a way that feels off, as if shaped by memory, nightmare, or delusion.
The Mists of Ravenloft, sentient and malicious, enclose each domain like a curtain of fog. They open and close at their own discretion, drawing in unsuspecting mortals and ensnaring the damned, never allowing escape unless the Mists themselves will it. To travel from one Domain of Dread to another is rare and often orchestrated by the dark powers that govern these places.
Fauna & Flora
At the heart of each domain is its Darklord—a cursed individual bound to their realm by their own sins and failings. They may possess near-absolute power within their borders, but they are also imprisoned, forever tormented by their deepest regrets, denied what they desire most. The domain reflects and reinforces their punishment, like a mirror of poetic justice.
Every domain is themed after a different form of horror:
- Gothic horror and tragedy,
- Psychological dread,
- Cosmic terror,
- Body horror,
- Folk horror,
- And more.
These themes define the laws of reality within the domain, influencing everything from the weather to the dreams of its people.
The domains are populated by a mix of:
- Ordinary people, often unaware of the true nature of their prison,
- Monsters, born of the domain’s particular horror,
- And planar travelers, pulled in by the Mists.
Most inhabitants live in a strange illusion of normalcy, repeating lives and stories caught in a loop created by the Darklord’s curse.
