Pink Hailstorm
Pink hail is a weather phenomena seen on Osao. The planet's tropical climate means snow and ice is almost never seen, but pink hail is an unusual type of hail which is formed in high temperatures.
Pink hailstorms can only be seen at night as the freezing temperatures that cause the hailstones to form cannot be achieved during the daytime. Many local slimes will stay up to watch pink hailstorms, which give off a faint glow in the dark as they rain from the sky.
Formation
Pink hail forms in thunderstorm clouds. It forms similar to regular hail; they start as water droplets coming from cumulonimbus clouds. The droplets supercool as they are subject to sub-zero temperatures in the atmosphere. The atmosphere above the Unuth Red Desert has a drastic shift from hot air to cool air, and when water droplets rise, they freeze almost immediately. As well, due to this instantaneous freezing, the droplets freeze in a perfect sphere.
The hail's pink colouration comes from the presence of cobalt fluoride in the lower atmosphere, which gives the Red Desert a pink hue. As water droplets rise they mix with the cobalt fluoride, and when frozen the pink colour becomes much more prominent. Hailstones seldom reach more than 3 centimetres in diameter, and are on average between 3 and 5 millimetres.
I would 100% stay up and watch a pink hailstorm. Under a roof though. :) I was wondering why it was pink so I am happy you explained <3
