Sunrathe Wastes

A subtropical desert formed during a geological upheaval, the Sunrathe Wastes suffer from a total lack of cloud cover most of the year. The fierce heat and dry winds combine to form one of the most inhospitable places on the planet.

Geography

Arid conditions year round have made this expanse of sand a death trap for unwitting travelers. From the tall, shifting dunes of the area known as the Sighing Sands, none have returned unchanged. The Eye of Rhô, a sea of smooth glass amidst the fine, swallowing silt of the deep desert, shines forth day and night as it reflects the sun, and then the moons, in an endless cycle of mirrored brilliance. The Cliffs of Zharn, walling in the lower half of the Sighing Sands, are said to hold the voices of the dead that are there laid to rest, in the innumerable niches and caves dotting the sheer stone of the cliff face.   Great rock formations dot some areas of the desert, while other expanses are nothing more than hectare upon hectare of fine, bare, grains of sand. A few roads have been carved through the hostile territory, but not many, and they are all of an ancient and unknown origin. Still, they seem to make the most logical sense, and have been proven safe from everything but bandits time and again.

Ecosystem

While the dust and sand of the desert seem as if they could not possibly harbor life of any kind, there is in fact an entire web of existence that illustrates nicely how each life form depends upon the others. In a very general sense, Krayt Dragons are the apex predators of the region. Their role is to keep the hebivore population in check, and to provide food for scavengers and insects. This draws silk spiders, known as Rimalis Widows, which also nest in old Krayt Dragon dens
