Session 1: Traveling Songs

General Summary

Unfortunately for the group, the professor paying for the canopic jar to be returned to its resting place didn't have the kind of money the party was demanding, what with his seventeen children and all. But, they decided it would be a good idea to put the curse of the canopic jar to rest anyway, and set off into the desert to travel to Heaton Bluffs.   Their guide, Owl, sang songs and hummed the entire time they traveled, telling stories and foraging for water and food as the party meanders through the dunes. He caught a couple of Krayt Lizards for everyone to try, cooking them up on a rudimentary spit that same night.   While Owl regaled the group with stories of desert flowers and famous musicians, a meteor shower began. Improbably, one of the space rocks fell to the planet only a few miles from the group, who witnessed the whole thing. Owl stated it was "good luck", and that much of the desert's iron originates with meteorites.
Curiosity piquing the party's curiosity, they decided to investigate the crash site. Much to their surprise, the impact crater was occupied by an eyeball monster! Loosening their weapons, the group prepares to attack! Suddenly, however, the brave group pivoted, deciding instead to approach the fearsome beast with kindness and compassion. Going so far as to give the creature water and conversation, the session ended with the group preparing to get back on the road to Heaton Bluffs.

The Keivoh by H Ogni
GM note: the way the kids decided to befriend the gruesome Keivoh was absolutely inspiring! I've thrown this encounter at six or seven different groups, now, and this is the first time this has happened. The group of players seems to be gelling well, and they all participated in their own way. Note that the TFAA was about Dorothea Dix and compassion, and the kids really illustrated that this session.

The Keivoh. Note, the characters did not defeat the Keivoh, so much as befriend it, so they did not take its heart. They instead got Heroic Inspiration, which will be explained to them next session.
