Session 2: Giant Ants Report
General Summary
We started off with our TFAA, talking about our UU Chalice, and the history behind it, before retiring to room 1 and starting our travel through the desert, trying to get to Heaton Bluffs and Professor Enberry. Traveling through the evening and early morning hours to avoid the oppressive heat of the day, our heroes encountered no troubles until they set up camp. Three of the group noticed strange tremors emanating from the ground, just before five Giant Ants erupted from the ground! Charging at the party's supply of food, the ants are intercepted by some of the party members; River approaching with a bowl of water to try to deter the impending threat.
Alas, the ants have their orders, and their orders are to take the food and return with it to the hive, which was discovered when Estrella cast Comprehend Languages, trying in vain to get the ants to forage elsewhere. Offers of sharing food were made, and much debate was had, as the ants incessantly repeated "The queen told us to get the food, you aren't the food, I need to go get the food cuz the queen told me to go get the food"...the ants' mantra is a constant background noise, now, to Estrella, and the ants are closing in! We left off at Helhound's turn in the Initiative Order.
GM Note:
The kids trying to befriend the ants was fascinating, and their reactions when unable to deter the insects would all have been plausible, if the ants weren't the size of a full grown horse. Great ideas were being thrown around the room like confetti, it was a lot of fun! We are going to add "Follow the Initiative Order" to the Covenant in class to provide a little more structure for the game, as the unguided exuberance was a little overwhelming at times. Talking over each other can ultimately slow the game down, although today was more fun than disruptive, and they are still learning the game. Game mechanics wise, they are picking up the nuts and bolts of the D&D5e system very quickly, and there is no lack of latent talent and creativity in that room!
