Trials to become emperor

The Aliens' live in a series of worlds that are divided into countries, each ruled by a king appointed via the global ranking system. Above these kings is an emperor who has largely symbolic powers but a lot of prestige. The title of emperor is obtained by winning a series of trials.

Steps of the trials

Who is eligible: Only individuals holding the title of king at the moment of the announce that imperial trials are going to be held.   Beginning: The candidates are presented to the general population on the Aliens' official network alongside a series of interview in which they all try to outshine each other—in the trials, like in all challenges, the public can vote to attribute bonus points to their favourite candidate, and so being popular can give them an edge over their rivals.   The actual selection of candidates is then done in 2 phases, each with different challenges to weed out the less talented kings.   Selection—phase 1: To pass the first phase, the kings need to be above a certain point threshold in the overall ranking, as well as to have reached a specific level in several challenge themes (duel, agility, knowledge, reasoning). Those who do not have the requirements have one last chance to qualify themselves by winning a short duelling tournament among each other.   Selection—phase 2: All qualified candidates are then made to go through several series of challenges, each time in a newly randomly assigned group. Each of these challenges give different amounts of trial points to the candidates depending on their results. By the end of this phase, only the top 10 candidates can progress to phase 3.   Selection—phase 3: In this phase, the candidates are made to run through further challenges, but this time within the same group of 10 individuals. This allows the public to fully compare and contrast them in different settings and to choose a favourite to support with bonus points.   Finals: The trials end with a duelling tournament between this final group of 10 candidates, with losers getting eliminated at each round and the final winner being crowned emperor. The order in each the duels are held is determined by the trial points the candidates have obtained in phase 1 and 2, something that can highly impact the results (e.g., a candidate having to fight more duels before the final and so being more tired, another candidate having access to more or different weapons...).

The risks

While the trials are dangerous, the kings are supposed to know the extend of their skills and when to step back, and they are not supposed to die before the finals. They are, after all, the best individuals in Alien society and are essential to the wellbeing of their countries.   The third phase is when danger increases, with some candidates being tempted to get rid of the competition beforehand—although there being more candidate in the finals can be more advantageous for candidates with the most points, as their rivals will be more tired before the last duel.   What kills candidates the most is actually an emperor being selected, as the other 9 finalists then need to publicly submit and recognise them as their emperor. Anyone who refuses to do so is simply executed there and then.
