Anchor rings
What
Thanks to their control of psy energy, the
Aliens can form a temporary mental link to communicate together. However, distance makes it very difficult to find a specific mind so as to form this link. To this end, the Aliens have created anchor rings, with each ring linked to a specific individual and helping their wearer find their mind to form a link.
How it works
An anchor ring contains two elements: an anchor stone and a printed circuit board.
The anchor stone: The Aliens have a gland in their neck that stores and controls psy energy. Each gland gives a specific vibration frequency to the psy energy it contains, the "psy signature". Anchor stones are an electronic component designed to retains one specific psy signature.
The printed circuit board: Psy energy does not naturally form links between minds; this properties needs to be imposed upon it by making it flow through specific patterns. This is the role of the printed circuit board. The board also connects to the anchor stone, and being in contact with it makes the psy energy be attracted to specific psy vibrations, and so to a specific mind.
Thus, when someone wants to use their ring, they simply push their psy energy inside the ring which then does all the hard work and allow them to find their correspondent's mind in a few seconds and to form a mental link with them.
Consequences
Communication can be done very easily and without wasting psy energy through normal mode of communication, via the Aliens'
network. Therefore, mental communication is reserved for discretion and intimacy, especially between romantic partners and co-conspirators. Knowing that two people exchanged rings thus naturally gives rise to a lot of speculations.
