Back to Chalcedon again. You seldom expect to miss a desert planet, but the desert has her own kind of beauty.
Almon D'Joy and I had a little staycation with Errol Vondromas, former Sith Sorcerer. He helped me understand this whole "use The Math to alter the universe around you thing if only a little bit", thing if only from the perspective of the Sith/Jedi.
We used The Rift (successfully) to return to Chalcedon in record time.
It was tense. Security was HIGH.
Chancellor Canter hospitalized the Hutt ambassador when he insisted on speaking to "the man in charge". That didn't change the already high tension much one way or the other.
One out of a hundred of the replicant terminator droids (droids implanted inside a full flesh body) have broken away and want to live free in the Freeworlds Republic. An amount of racism against the replicants was politically weaponized by the Hutts to try to gain their services. (The Hutts are ok with enslaving any non-Hutts.)
Danar Vorpadaran's Techno-Virus is still progressing slowly although the significant local medical capabilities are working on removing it from his system without leaving any limbs or organs missing. General Kerplokken is publicly leading the planetary defenses, (played by Danar's clone Damien, who does have good leadership skills as it turns out).
Captain Koleen is still in her newlywed phase and is enjoying her new ship as well as her new family.
So'Zen has his Cyber-Raptor-Ducks in a pen, but his dragon has set up its own residence next to the Valley of Mist near the capitol city of Port Etmar.
While Almon and I were studying with Errol Vondromas, I received a knock on the door by a very intensely concerned Jula Brisina. (Palatine of the Sisters of Battle mission to bodyguard and escort the Galactic Star Empire’s royal consort, Yeager Lexis while on Chalcedon) who proposed the conundrum to me that the Replicants were showing signs of being, frankly, either holy or evil. You see, specifically we needed to determine whether the Replicants are "machines built in the image of the human mind", (which must be exterminated by the SoB's) or a newly discovered (if not newly created) specie of living being which is being abused by another power enslaving them as infiltration troops (which must be freed and protected). Not knowing is starting to form a schism among Orange Catholics like us, (Mentats, Bene Gesserritts, Sisters of Battle, etc.).
I began to plan a scientific experiment to determine exactly that and publish it to nip the schism in its metaphorical bud. It started with an interview with a non-violent Replicant, Nova Zaleed. Nova was a largely nondescript humanoid, which befits an infiltrator. She had olive tan skin, typical to the Kiffar people, and a common yellow Kiffar tattoo across her face. She seemed polite and kind.
As a master of disguise and impersonation myself, I spoke with her for an hour and found her reactions to sudden emotional stimulation to match that of a living being, not a mechanical simulation. And, as a living being, she seemed to be sincere, not concealing ulterior motives as I have had to do many times in my career. She seemed to feel motivated to help me attempt to locate other Replicants and force upon them the opportunity to break free from their past and start new lives.
I warned her that it might be a mission: "impossible". Upon hearing my words, Nova's voice changed, deepened, like someone suddenly obeying a post-hypnotic suggestion. She repeated four sets of four numbers four times before returning to her normal self, apparently not noticing that she had lost a few seconds of the conversation. The series of numbers seemed to be a random sequence, so I felt certain that they were not.
Palatine Julia and I said our goodbye-for-now's. She started a search to locate another Replicant in the wild. I started a search at the local library to try to find meaning in the 16 digits.
Hicks came by seeking relief from service with Vanya. He helped us discover that these were 3D chess moves used by Jem Vandos to win the tournament on Nar Shaddaa a while ago to settle a Hutt territory dispute. I feel it is safe to assume Jem (or an ally of his) is with whoever is controlling the Replicants. And I calculate the chess moves coincide with coordinates in the Chalcedon solar system, 98% likely.
(Build translator to Lizardman for So'Zen.)
Chancellor says that Jem is being moved and hidden, under armed guard. Rico got himself caught and stored with him, according to his plan. I used the coordinates to find the timing and locations of the hostage moves, per the chess game.
The first was a Moon of Moderick wolf creatures with crystal fur. So'Zen stopped a thermal well from exploding. An abandoned militery complex from the clone wars.
The other location is Spacers Tears. Shattered planet orbiting its center of mass. Captain Koleen notices it is below the surface of the planet bits down in the mining colonies.
As horrible as the trip will be, I think we will all go on this mission.
Suddenly the door chimed. The Chancellor's communications guy, Jenkins, entered with an important datapad. He traced a signal to Rico's current location. Rico signaled that he was with Jem on the way to Spacers' Tears.
Fasten your safety belts. We are in for a bumpy ride.
