Southern Midasfjall

Southern Midasfjall is a vast untamed wildland consisting of huge mountain ranges, endless grassy plains, thick jungles teeming with exotic flora and fauna, twisting rivers that flow with fresh mountain spring water, a reef filled with beautiful coral formations and several close-by volcanic islands. It encompasses the vast region of land south of the Gigantiaia Jungle and is home to a type of beast that doesn't make its home anywhere else on the continent; the dinosaur. These reptilian beasts are able to reach a size to rival even that of the giant race who inhabit the colossal mountain range, known as the Greatrock Range, that dominates the center of the region. The Gigantiaia Jungle is also home to the Lizardfolk who live as tribes within the jungle. These Lizardfolk differ from their Erimian counterparts in that they are more crocodilian in nature and look. Most of the races who live in Southern Midasfjall live a nomadic way of life; they must keep moving to avoid humungous rampaging dinosaurs and the ever present threat of giant worshipping tribes of goliath who roam the plains looking for tribes of people to raid and make slaves out of.
Despite the great difficulty, however, some areas of the region have been successfully tamed and settled. To the northwest, perched high on the cliffside overlooking Hushed Wave Gulf, is the human city-state of Kaldoran which consists of a mix of seafaring residents and eager guilds who launch their exploratory enterprises from the city into Southern Midasfjall. United under the banner of a Hobgoblin king, the goblinoid races - a coalition of goblin, hobgoblin and bugbear peoples - have built for themselves a small but rapidly growing town, nestled in the foothills to the west of the Greatrock Range close to the main road to Eastern Midasfjall, known as Kurdun. To the south of the Greatrock Range lies the sacred city of Myraan - also known as the city of four elements. It is a holy meeting place of the four tribes of the Genasi who each have their tribal homes nearby. Built on the shore of a cove close to the Potami River's estuary, where it opens out into the The Azure Sea is a large port town of lawless seafaring freemen known as Dinilia. This raucous coastal town is a haven for pirates of all kinds who sail the The Azure Sea where they can shelter from pirate hunters, the navies of the surrounding kingdoms and most of all the tenacious triton people who doggedly hunt for those who sail under a black flag.

Geography

Jungles/Forests
  • Gigantiaia Jungle - This large swath of dense jungle land spans the entirety of the divide between eastern and southern Midasfjall. The flora of this jungle grow to enormous sizes, utterly dwarfing even giants, and no one knows for sure why. It is theorised by some that the magical cataclysm which wiped out the Ordentian Empire is responsible for the exceptional growth of this woodland, whereas others believe that the goddess of earth and animals, Gaia, favours Southern Midasfjall and causes the jungle trees to grow so large to keep it separated from the rest of the continent.
Wetlands
  • Hydra Head Swamp - The Hydra Head Swamp is located along the main body of the Hydra Head River. It formed as a result of the plains of Southern Midasfjall sloping to the south. The swamp is home to a vast variety of toads, snakes and insects but most notably there are the Bullywug creatures who make their homes within.
Rivers
  • Hydra Head River - Known as the Hydra Head River for the five tributaries which flow down from the Greatrock Range to the east and open out into the ocean very close to Hushed Wave Gulf, it is a wide but lazily flowing river that residents of the nearby city of Kaldoran travel up and down on using river barges.
  • Potami River - The Potami River is fed by two lakes and is joined by tributaries until it opens out into the The Azure Sea on the western coast of Southern Midasfjall. The primary lake that feeds the river is located on the western slopes of the Greatrock Range and is known as Greatrock Lake , the Potami River is then joined by a tributary that flows from Splinterspring Lake which is located in the smaller northern range of mountains known as the Splinters.
Lakes
  • Greatrock Lake - Nestled in the high slopes of the Greatrock Range lies a lake visited only by the giants who live nearby. Greatrock Lake forms the headwaters for the Potami River.
  • Splinterspring Lake - sat at the foot of the vale in the Splinters, Splinterspring Lake is home to many species of waterside creature but most commonly found are the giant beavers.
Mountain Ranges
  • Greatrock Range - The Greatrock Range is a colossal mountain range of enormous peaks, low valleys and plateaus high enough to look out over the surrounding geography of Southern Midasfjall from above. It is home to the giants of Midasfjall who built their gargantuan fortress-homes on the sides of the largest of the mountains at the center of the range.
  • The Splinters - Just northwest of the Greatrock Range lies a smaller but no less foreboding range of mountains known as the Splinters. The Splinters consist of a broken ring of mountains with sides so sheer that they are almost impossible to scale, and a hilly vale curtained by the surrounding mountains at the base, which makes it a perfect habitat for avian creatures that hunt for land mammals to prey upon, and a dangerous place for unprepared visitors.
Foothills
  • Ruddy Rock Hills - The Ruddy Rock Hills are a collection of low hills with lazy inclines located southwest of the Splinters. They are named for the ruddy orange coloured rock that cane be seen throughout the hillside.
