Eldryan Sword

This article is a Work In Progress.
I need to come back and polish up the writing..
The Eldryan Sword is a short sword that is a standard-issued weapon by the Dragonguard. It was created during the Draconian War for most dragonguard personnel. It is a lightweight short sword that features a dragon's head for the handguard with its horns for the quillons. There are several variants and different styles, but they all stem from the standard-issued sword's design.   The sword was designed and crafted by dragonguard swordsmiths in Eldrya during the time the town was being built. It was designed for the use of dealing with enemy dragonkin in close combat, while still being light and small enough not to be cumbersome in tight spaces or while riding on the backs of dragonkin. While small firearms may work against humans, sometimes, they will not take down a large dragonkin with naturally tough scales and potentially wearing additional armor. The sword is just long enough to reach the dragonkin's heart if plunged into various places of the chest, where any vulnerable spots in the armor may be.

Uses

There are several uses for the Eldryan sword, mostly military. These swords are actually used for combat, mainly to deal with an enemy's dragonkin if met face to face with one. Other uses include survival situations, depending on whether you have the specific sword that can be used as a striker for a ferrocerium rod. The other common use is for ceremonial purposes; they are more stylish and intricate, but are not sharpened or used for actual combat. Despite the Eldryan sword being a standard-issued weapon for almost all Dragonguard personnel, only officers and specific units will be equipped with this sword for ceremonial events.

Types and Styles

Many parts of the sword vary depending on the purpose and type of the sword, but they all follow a similar standard theme. Pommels are generally the same, except they are more intricate or even customizable for officers and ceremonial purposes. The handguard usually features an open-mouth dragon's head with the blade coming out of its mouth, but the specific type of dragon can vary. There are also a few types of blades, but all of them are 23 inches in length.

3/4 Blade / Half-sabre

(This section is a super-WIP as I don't know if these proportions would actually work out well. 3/4 and 1/4 of the blade were just arbitrary numbers I put down.)
Even the blade varies across swords: some are standard double-edged blades, and others feature a full cutting edge on one side and a 3/4-edged side on the other, with the last 1/4 of the blade closest to the handguard unsharpened and serving as a false edge. These swords can be used while wielding a bow (though bows are not often used in modern times) or a small firearm, while still keeping the sword at the ready. The 1/4 spine of the blade can be rested against the pit of the arm while aiming with a firearm. The firearm can then be holstered or thrown down, and the sword quickly rotated forward, pointing at the enemy, with a thrust of the arm.[2] Additionally, this thickened, non-sharp part of the blade can also be used as a striker for a ferrocerium rod, like a flint and steel, in survival situations.

Ceremonial

Ceremonial swords vary in all components depending on who they are for and the rank of the individual. They are not typically sharpened; however, most have a sharp tip. Although the Eldryan sword is issued to most dragonguard personnel, only officers are equipped with the sword during ceremonial events. Each branch of the dragonguard also has its own style of ceremonial swords for officers. Still, even this type of sword follows the same layout as the standard design, but with more intricate details, different materials, and even slight customization for high-ranking individuals.   The most notable and famous ceremonial sword is the one for the Archon of the Dragonguard, which is actually also their combat sword. Each Archon customizes the design of their sword and uses it throughout their entire career as the Archon. After retirement or upon the Archon's death, their sword is retired and displayed in a museum in Eldrya, along with all the past Archon swords. The Archon, however, is allowed to choose whether or not to have a separate combat sword, not used for ceremonial purposes. If the Archon decides to do this, both the combat and ceremonial swords will be retired and displayed in the museum.

Trivia

  • The Eldryan Sword was inspired by the design of a sword Nulcheck's brother gave him.[1]
  • The 3/4 Blade type was inspired by a video from blumineck about wielding a sword and bow.[2]
