Draconian Deck

The standard 56-card deck, commonly known as the Draconian Deck, is the most common pack of playing cards. It is similar to the standard 52-card deck but with an additional set of court cards. Each card contains a colorful or complex design on one side, ensuring anonymity of the cards when their value is to be kept secret. The other side bears a suit as well as an alphanumerical value, which may be used to distinguish the cards in game mechanics.

Composition

A Draconian Deck comprises 56 cards of 14 ranks in each of the four suits: Hoards, Hearts, Scales, and Claws. Each suit includes four court cards: Jack, Guardian, Queen, and King. Each suit also includes 10 numeral cards, from one (Ace) to ten. Each card displays the appropriate numeral in at least two corners, except "A" for the Ace, "J" for the Jack, "G" for the Guardian, "Q" for the Queen, and "K" for the King.   The deck is also divided in half based on color. The Hoards and Hearts suits are red, while the Scales, and Claws suits are black.   The Guardian court card sits between the Jack and the Queen.[1]   In addition, the 56-card deck also includes a pair of Ancients, with a small star and a dragon's head in at least two corners. The Ancients are often distinguishable from one another, with one being colored white or a simple black outline, while the other is colored full in black. They are respectively called the White Ancient and the Black Ancient. Alternatively, some decks may have red and black Ancient versions, corresponding with the red and black colors of the other cards in the deck. Some decks may contain a blue or gold Ancient instead.   In most games, the ace is considered the highest-valued card. If the Ancient cards are used, they are considered the highest court cards and are even above the ace.

Design

The most popular standard pattern of the Draconian Deck is sometimes referred to as the International pattern. The second most popular is a minimalist design (pictured above), only containing the suit and value in two corners.   The standard full design has the suit and value in all four corners. Additionally, it has a collection of suits in the center of the card in the quantity of the card's value. The court cards of the full design depict a picture of a person for each court. The ancient cards also display an image of various Ancient Dragonkin, based on the color of the card and its common nickname.   The Black Ancient card will almost always depict an image of the Wyrm of Chaos, as it is commonly used as a death card. The Golden Ancient card will almost always depict an image of Airigold, known as Golden Claw, because of his golden accents. The Red Ancient card may come in a variety of designs, usually depicting an image of a red ancient. The White Ancient card can contain almost any Ancient Dragonkin, in a black and white, outlined design.   The Blue Ancient card may come in a variety of designs, usually depicting an image of a blue ancient, most of which are sea-faring.
  • Sphyii, the Novascale with her irridescent blue scales.
  • Taavi, the largest sea serpent known as the Void Leviathan.
  • Keel Cracker, another large sea serpent, sometimes known as the Kraken.
  • Nicknames

Certain cards and suits have acquired nicknames over time.
  • The Hoards suit is sometimes also called Rubies, due to the suit looking like a red gemstone.
  • The Black Ancient card is usually referred to as the Wyrm of Chaos, and is used as a death card or a trump card in some games. This is in reference to his scorched earth method during the Twenty Year Scourge.
  • In the Scourge War card game, when the game goes into Scorched Earth, players draw an extra Legend Card and place both of theirs face-up on the battlefield. If any of the Legend Cards is the Black Ancient, the game is Scorched and starts over with no winner. If none of the Legend Cards are the Black Ancient, the game is spared and continues.
  • The Blue Ancient card is sometimes called the Novascale Ancient as a reference to Sphyii, who has irridescent blue scales.
  • The Golden Ancient card is sometimes referred to as Golden Claw as a reference to Airigold, who has golden accents.

  • Trivia

  • This was based on the Standard 52-card deck with an extra set of court cards, the Guardian.[1]
  • The Knight / Cavalier card was renamed to Guardian with the value of "G". This was due to the fact that Dragonguard personnel are called Guardians, and was deemed fitting for this world.
  • The Joker card was renamed to Ancient with the value of a colored star and a card suit of a colored dragon's head.
  • Some of the card suits were changed to create a dragon-themed deck of cards.
  • Hoards / Rubies instead of Diamonds. Depicting a "Dragon's Hoard".
  • While the Hearts suit wasn't changed, it can represent a "Dragon's Heart".
  • Scales instead of Spades.
  • Claws instead of Clubs.
  • This deck, and its own variant of suits, was solely created for the Scourge War Card Game.

Really love how you have adapted this for your world, especially with the black Ancient card being a trump/death card in some games.
