Ridgeback Pass

The magnificent Ridgeback Mountains range is characterized by its rugged terrain and breathtaking vistas, featuring two distinct passageways that cut through its imposing cliffs. However, only the broader southern route is utilized for transportation today, as the northern pass has earned a reputation for being perilously narrow and treacherous. The northern pass has instead morphed into a favored destination for avid hikers seeking adventure.   Historically, these passageways served a vital role in transporting essential materials from the quaint town of Ridgford to the ambitious settlement of Eldrya during its conception and construction. The northern pass, despite its inherent dangers, was preferred for its proximity to Eldrya, allowing for quicker transit times. At the estuary's edge, just beyond the northern pass, a modest dock was established to facilitate the transfer of goods by water to Eldrya.   After the Draconian War, the northern pass was officially closed to commercial traffic due to safety concerns and ongoing geological instability. Over time, however, the dedicated efforts of the Dragonguard transformed it into a secure, accessible route for hikers, becoming a popular tourist spot.

Geography

Northern Pass

The northern pass, known as the Northern Defile by the Dragonguard during the Draconian War, is a narrow, treacherous route that winds through the rugged terrain, characterized by steep, imposing rock faces. A small, crystal-clear stream cascades gracefully over various cliff edges, its waters sparkling in the sunlight as it meanders through the valley. The stream ultimately empties into the northern reaches of the Guardian's Haven Bay estuary.   In stark contrast to the arid conditions typically found on the leeward side of mountains, this valley flourishes with vibrant greenery. It bursts forth with an array of wildflowers, lush bushes, and stately trees, creating a stunning tapestry of life amid the harsh landscape.   The narrowness of the northern Ridgeback Pass posed a logistical challenge, forcing the Dragonguard troops to march in a tightly packed single column when the route was still used as a thoroughfare. After a demanding journey through the pass, the Guardians debouched into the broad, open expanse of the estuary shoreline, where the landscape transformed into a serene sight.   Today, the northern pass has undergone a transformation, becoming a popular destination for adventurous hikers and nature enthusiasts. Although it is technically feasible to traverse the entire route and reach the other side, there is no officially designated hiking trail. Following the end of the Draconian War, the Dragonguard officially closed the pass to commercial traffic due to safety concerns and ongoing geological instability. While it was turned into a hiking trail, numerous sections of the route were still deemed too hazardous for recreational use and have been carefully cordoned off to protect both the environment and potential hikers.

Southern Pass

The southern pass, known today simply as the Ridgeback Pass, is significantly wider than its northern counterpart, making it a more secure option for traversing the treacherous mountain range. Despite its advantages, the Dragonguard often preferred the narrow northern route due to the southern pass's considerable distance from the city of Eldrya. This route, characterized by its spaciousness, served as a vital thoroughfare for transporting large or oddly shaped cargo that presents challenges for the more confined northern passage.   Once the shipments successfully navigated the southern pass, they continued for several hours across the expansive, flat plains that lie beyond the mountains. This journey led to the tranquil southern part of the Guardian's Haven Bay, where the cargo was then loaded onto ships. The vessels then sailed up the estuary that winds toward the city of Eldrya, bringing the city of much needed materials and goods.   Currently, the southern pass stands as the sole accessible route for regular travel through the mountain range; the northern passageway, fraught with peril, remains impractical for everyday travel. The southern route, therefore, plays an indispensable role in maintaining the flow of trade and supplies to Ridgford and its surrounding areas.
