Legend

A Legend, or Legend Name, is an informal yet powerful title conferred upon individuals whose actions and contributions resonate profoundly across the globe. The designation of "legend" does not inherently imply that the individual embodies virtuous qualities; rather, it signifies that they have left an incredible mark on history, culture, or society and are widely recognized for it.   For Ancient Dragonkin, they are often referred to by names that are easier for humans to remember, rather than their original, ancient names. With the passage of time, the true names of these Ancient Dragonkin tend to fade from collective memory, leading people to identify them solely by their legend name.   In contrast, the legends of humans and non-ancient dragonkin, known as the latterborn, are far rarer in comparison to their ancient counterparts. These individuals are typically recognized by their actual names rather than an overarching legend name, which emphasizes the unique historical context of Ancient Dragonkin.

Requirements

In order to earn the title of a legend, an individual must not only make a significant impact on the world but also achieve widespread recognition for their contributions among the general public. The designation of "legend" does not inherently imply that the individual embodies virtuous qualities; rather, it signifies that they have left an incredible mark on history, culture, or society and are widely recognized for it.

Appointment

The appointment of a legend name is informal and may often go unrecognized by the individual who receives such a title. While there is no designated authority responsible for assigning these legend names, a meticulous record is maintained by the Dragonguard. This has led some to speculate that the Dragonguard may play a role in the unofficial assignment of these titles. However, this notion remains more of a myth than a reality.   In truth, the fastest way for an individual to gain recognition as a legend is through the global alliance of the Dragonguard. This alliance acts as a network that amplifies the contributions of individuals, thereby elevating their status.

History

The concept of legend status and title did not emerge until near the end of the Twenty Year Scourge, a period marked by chaos and devastation.   Long before humans knew of the existence of Ancient Dragonkin, the first individual to be informally bestowed with a legend name was Anaq, famously known as the Wyrm of Chaos. His infamous tactics, characterized by scorched-earth methods that left entire cities in ruins, solidified his reputation among both allies and foes. It became increasingly evident to humans that a select group of dragonkin repeatedly led these attacks, which hinted at a dark collaboration among them.   With the formation of the enigmatic Dragonguard, a pivotal moment on the horizon of the Draconian War, certain Ancient Dragonkin who opposed Anaq's reign of destruction, sought a partnership with the newly established alliance. This gesture marked a critical turning point, as these beings recognized the need to unite against a common adversary. As the Draconian War erupted in full force, the populace began to informally assign them legend names — titles that reflected their valor and contributions, given that few knew their true names.   Following the conclusion of the war, these Ancient Dragonkin embraced their legend names, welcoming the recognition. As a result, they have since been immortalized in history by these names, symbols of their enduring legacy.

This is fun. I like the idea of legend as a somewhat formal title you can earn, even if you may not be aware that you have earnt it.
