The
Shatterscale Rift is a stunning geological feature located in the mid-nothern region of a valley nestled within the rugged terrain of the
Shatterscale Mountains. Located just above the Shatterscale Pass, this rift marks a notable divide in the landscape. The northern valley river flows into the rift, creating a natural barrier that prevents the seasonal snowmelt from reaching the vast ocean to the south.
Further to the north, perched high within the mountainside, lies a remarkable cave, meticulously carved by the
Ancient Dragonkin, known as
Dragonspire. The exact location hasn't been found, as the unforgiving terrain and high altitudes are relentless, preventing anyone from discovering the cave's true location.
The rift itself is an imposing chasm in the valley floor, leading to an expansive underground cavern. Over the years, it has transformed into a popular tourist destination, featuring a carefully constructed pathway along the perimeter of the rift. A breathtaking bridge spans the chasm about midway, offering stunning views of the depths below.
Explorers and cavers have made numerous attempts to chart the intricate network of caverns. The sheer scale and complexity of the underground system, combined with the relentless flow of the northern river, which fills a significant portion of the cave with water, pose a challenging task.

A vast gaping opening in the valley north of the Shatterscale Pass opens into an immense cavern, stretching almost the entire width of the valley floor. Here, the melted snow from the northern expanse cascades into the rift, creating a raging, persistent stream that feeds into the dark recesses below.
A pathway has been constructed that meanders along the rugged ridge of the rift, offering breathtaking views of the cavern's depths. However, about midway along this path, a bridge arches across the chasm, connecting both sides. The northern portion of the rift, strewn with unstable geological features, has been declared too hazardous for public access, safeguarding hikers from potential risks.
Seasoned cave surveyors rappel down from the bridge, equipped with advanced climbing gear to navigate the treacherous descent. Alternatively, some may use their smaller-sized dragonkin to fly down, but this can potentially be too risky.
The cavern itself remains shrouded in mystery, as its immense scale has yet to be fully explored and charted. Towering stalactites hang from the ceiling, and water pools in underground lakes, created by the influx of the northern valley river. The extensive flooding renders large sections of the cave inaccessible, concealing the passageways. It is believed that the extensive underground river from this cave recharges the aquifers of the region.
A diverse and intricate array of flora and fauna has been discovered within the rift. At the bottom of the rift's opening lies a small, semi-subsurface forest, characterized by towering trees and a carpet of leaf litter and moss. This unique environment is home to a range of small animals, many of which have inadvertently fallen into the rift and become trapped in this secluded habitat. Among the most remarkable inhabitants is a diminutive tree-faring wyvern, unique to this semi-subterranean forest. This agile predator has been observed deftly hunting on the small animals, birds, and bats that also call the tiny forest home.
The forest additionally teems with insect life, presenting a mix of both familiar and rare species. While many of the insects can be found in surrounding areas, some are exclusive to this hidden woodland. Notably, the
Rift Scarab, a species whose hardened exoskeleton shimmers in the dim light, alongside common woodlice, plays a crucial role in the ecosystem. These insects feed on decomposing plant material and organic matter, helping to recycle nutrients back into the forest's soil.
In the depths of the caverns, the atmosphere transforms dramatically. The walls become adorned with bioluminescent fungi that emit a soft, ethereal glow, illuminating the space with hues of blue and green. Sticky stands of mucus excreted by glowworms that dangle from the ceiling, poised to ensnare any unsuspecting insect that flies too close.
I think Rift Scarab might be a dead link is the article published? Cool article aside from that end love me some good old treacherous mountain terrain.
Thanks! Yeah, currently working on that article, just temp linked it ahead of time
