Serna

Demographics

Serna has a diverse population dominated by native Kopolchians with a small percentage of long-settled immigrants. The class divide is visible: upper-class citizens reside in Ivy Arch and Celestial Song, while working-class families settle in South Town and Cobbler’s Grove. Nightstreet and Bonefield have long been impoverished districts, attracting scrutiny and stigma. There is a growing population of artists, engineers, and entrepreneurs due to Serna’s cultural appeal and economic opportunities.

Government

Serna operates under a mayoral system. The mayor, elected every six years, oversees a city council comprised of district-elected officials. While the government is nominally autonomous, the Principality of Kopolchia reserves the right to replace the mayor in extreme situations. Most public services are coordinated through centralized municipal offices housed near the city’s historical center.

Industry & Trade

Serna is a major commercial hub in the Principality. It specializes in:

  • Confectionery and Baked Goods (Cobbler’s Grove)
  • Textile Design and Luxury Fashion (South Town, Ivy Arch)
  • Entertainment and Media (Celestial Song)
  • Tourism (Old Town)
  • Exporting Glass, Honey, and Fine Jewelry
It also hosts major underground trade networks through Nightstreet, including black-market goods and forbidden knowledge, largely attributed to the Shadowsong Order's influence.

Infrastructure

Serna is a well-connected city, with paved main roads radiating out from Old Town like spokes on a wheel. It boasts a complex aqueduct and waterway management system due to its proximity to the Kalapech River. Bridges link the main city with Cobbler’s Grove across the water. Electric tram lines connect the richer and commercial districts, while Nightstreet and Bonefield rely more on foot traffic and local carriages. Sanitation, energy, and communication networks are modernized primarily in Celestial Song and Ivy Arch.

Districts

Old Town

Where tradition lives. Serna's oldest district is a living museum, beloved for its reenactments, weekend markets, and cobbled plazas. Architecture here is pre-charter: heavy masonry, stone balconies, and leaded-glass windows. It's a cultural centerpiece.

Nightstreet

Long associated with poverty and crime. The presence of The Shadowsong Order has caused a mysterious quiet to settle. Most avoid it, not out of contempt anymore, but fear. Those who love here tend to be left alone, which many prefer.

Bonefield

A ghost of its former self. Once a fine-dining escape on the outskirts of Ivy Arch, now it's full of derelict buildings, animal carcasses, and whispered rumors of killings. The smell of rot haunts the air. Locals steer clear, calling it a dead zone.

South Town

This district thrives with middle-class energy. It's the family center of the city, filled with parks, midrange eateries, and charming little shops tucked in winding alleys. People here know their neighbors and look after each other.

Celestial Song

Both the name of the towering skyscraper and the district around it, this area represents modern Serna. Steel and glass buildings shimmer beside wide streets and public scupltures. The headquarters of several international trade companies are located in Celestial Song.

Ivy Arch

Reserved, refined, and rich. Ivy Arch is walled in foliage and fences. White stone mansions, elite clubs, and rooftop gardens make the district where the old money lives and plays. Few enter uninvited.

Cobbler's Grove

Across the Kalapech River, this quaint district is a sweet-toothed paradise. Known for its bakeries and handmade candies, it's also a center for agricultural labor. Many families here run small family farms or vineyards.

History

Serna began as a fishing and trade settlement on the Kalapech River. It was officially granted a charter three decades later, becoming a cultural powerhouse and eventually a capital-tier city. The Shadowsong Order quietly infiltrated Nightstreet over the last half-century, influencing power structures from the shadows. The decay of Bonefield began following a series of mysterious disappearances in the early 1800s AR, leading to the area's current cursed reputation.
