Culture

The inhabitants, especially those living in Venecia worship Logarin and contracts are seen as one of the pillars of civilization. Breaking a contract is viewed as sacrilege. The people under the merchants councils rule are exceptionally loyal to their government, since the relations between rulers and their subjects are seen as a form of contract.   Furthermore, the military heritage of their forebearers from Nordland is strong, causing the people to hold their soldiers in high regards. The military is still strongly involved in the affairs of the government.   However, since the venecians dwell in Middland for centuries, they intermingled with the middlandians and in some aspects they adopt middlandian culture. For example in language, or in the depiction of their main deity Logarin. The northmen usually depict him armed, whilst the middlandians show him with professional equipment. In Venecia they draw pictures of Logarin in a mixed way and cladding him in more fancy clothes than the north men do.

History

Migration to Middland

After disagreeing with the election of the King of Nordland a few centuries ago, the ancestors of the venecians left Nordland and sailed southwards. They landed in the then named Azure Bay and founded Venecia, which became their capital city after being granted additional fiefdoms from the Holy Emperor.

Invasion of Nordland

Building up a respectable merchants fleet and an armada to protect it, they became the supreme naval power of the Holy Empire of Middland. In an attempt to conquer Nordland the venecians provided the ships and their marines for the emperors war effort, ultimately contributing largely to the occupation of southern Nordland.

The Schwabhausen Rebellion

After being asked by the Holy Emperor to investigate potential smuggling operations between Venecia and merchants from Südland in the Bay of Venecia, they were not only enraged at Jockel Schwabhausen accusation but also thought it a plot of House Schwabhausen to seize the lions share of the tariffs by besmirching Venecia's reputation.   Nevertheless, the council sent their investigators who reported no transgressions against the current trade contracts and relaied this to the Holy Emperor.   When Jockel Schwabhausen was imprisoned by Holy Emperor Karl Folly for accusing the emperor to be bribed by the venecians, his brother Xander Schwabhausen declared war on the merchants council. Since then, Hertug Tomke Rossberg leads the armies in an effort to right this injustice.
