Major Council
The Major Council is the base of power of the Venecian Merchant Council and consists of 2.000 citizens that are at least 25 years of age, without barring women from being called into it.
To be called to be one of the members of this council one has to be a renowned citizen. Be it merchants, clerks, lawyers, judges or soldiers. Due to the military heritage of the venecian ancestors, soldiers, especially officers, predominantly naval officers, make out the bulk of the council members. Until 1039, members of the council could only come from the military. This law was abolished to appease the growing power of merchants and clerks in the republic.
