Hertug
Hertug (Duke in the common tongue), is the titel of the elected ruler of the Venecian Merchant Council.
The Hertug is elected by 40 members of the major council who in turn are elected every time a Hertug has to be chosen by said council. Despite the law restricting the candidates for this title to officers of the military was abolished in 1039, every Hertug was elected from the ranks of the most renowned soldiers of the republic, since the Major Council is still dominated by officers.
The current wearer of this title is Tomke Rossberg.
