Grifas Highlands

The Grifas Highlands is an area of high elevation hills and small mountains in Miskunas. They are south of the Zalius Forest, west of the Drakunas Forest, and north of the Bluerock Mountains. The elevation doesn’t reach as high as the mountain ranges such as the Frostspine Mountains and Bluerock Mountains, but it is definitively higher than the other areas of Miskunas.

Geography

The Grifas Highlands consists mostly of high hills and low mountains that extend from the Drakunas Forest all the way to the Sea of Strife. About half of the highlands are on the Grifas Penninsula that juts out from the mainland into the Sea of Strife. Much of the coastal areas of the highlands are rough cliffs that are not appropriate for docks or coastal cities.   There are a few rivers in the highlands which is where many of the towns and villages in the region are based. These rivers are generally much more treacherous to travel via boat as they are much more rough, rocky, and have many rapids. They are also not nearly as deep as some of the other rivers in Miskunas.   The highlands can be quite difficult to travel in the winter as the area gets quite a bit of snow due to the high elevation of the area.   Many folks consider the highlands to be a quite beautiful region of Miskunas with many spectacular views.

Fauna & Flora

The Grifas Highlands has a variety of flora. While the area is not heavily forested, there are areas covered in highland pines, birches, and some oaks. Much of the land is covered in a variety of grasses and flowers many of which are useful for alchemical purposes. Various types of lichens, mosses, and fungi grow in this area.   The Grifas Highlands has a great diversity of fauna. Mammals such as deer, voles, badgers, stoats, goats, and highlands cattle tend to roam the highlands. Wolves also have a presence in the highlands, particularly the wooded areas. There are a variety of birds that inhabit the area such as ravens, crows, eagles, hawks, grouses, and more.   There are several larger animals and monsters that inhabit this land. The most important one being the griffon of which the area is named after. The highlands have a reputation for having a nastier form of griffon than other places have. The highlands griffon is larger and fierce get than its normal counterpart.   There are also a large number of hill giants in the highlands.  The hill giants often congregate into small communities and very often individual hill giants will venture out for food.

Natural Resources

The most prominent natural resource of the Grifas Highlands is the mineral wealth the lies beneath the surface of the hills.  The land is rich in iron, lead, aluminum, many gemstones, dolomite, limestone, clay, and many other minerals.  There are some mines that are rich in gold and silver, but they are more rare than other minerals.   The other main natural resource are the goats and sheep that graze on the hills of the highlands.  Settlements in the highlands usually have several goat and sheep pastures surrounding them.  The goats provide the people of the area with both milk and meat, and the sheep provide them with wool and meat.
