Blood Rift
Ervenian Era, 1051 AB
The Blood Rift is a massive, shifting scar in the Abyss, an ever-deepening canyon torn open by ancient conflict and sustained by eternal hatred. It serves as one of the few metaphysical wounds shared between the Nine Hells and the Infinite Abyss, a bleeding gash in planar reality where the River of Blood (sometimes synonymous with the River Styx in distorted form) cuts through stone, air, and purpose alike.
Once thought to be a mere borderland, the Rift has since been folded wholly into the Abyss itself. Its deep walls, coated with moss-fed crimson mist, drip with the memories of slaughter. Here, geography is a ledger of war, and time loops like a wound that won’t close.
The Rift acts as a principal junction between the Abyss and the Nine Hells, making it the central theater of The Blood War.
On occasion, the Rift stretches outward to graze other Lower Planes, such as Hades or Gehenna, bringing bloodshed to their borders until divine or infernal forces intervene to sever the breach.
The River of Blood flows unpredictably through the canyon, dissolving established routes and landmarks. Its course is never the same, and its waters poison both flesh and fate.
Geography
The Blood Rift is lined with ruined bridges, hanging fortresses, and disjointed towers embedded in its vertical cliffs. Many of these constructions are half-sunk into reality and time—sometimes usable, sometimes spectral echoes.
Suspended walkways forged from Mezzofiend-wrought alloys. These link war camps and ancient gates, but many sway above bottomless fog or acid storms. There also Geysers of memory-draining vapor, called Oblivion Wells. Prolonged exposure can erase entire identities or battle techniques.
The Echo-Warrens: Collapsed siege tunnels beneath the Rift walls. They are littered with rusted war banners, lost infernal artillery, and maddened remnants of both sides.
Localized Phenomena
Scholars argue whether the Blood Rift is a true Abyssal layer or a fissure that pierces across several. Some theories attribute its creation to the seismic battle between Demogorgon and Obox-ob, others to ancient obyrith rites gone awry.
Climate
The bloodmist, ever-rising from the river below, fosters unnatural moss and vermin colonies. These thrive even on stone and metal, feeding on psychic anguish and physical decay.
It should be mentioned, that along the crevasse walls are countless planar gates, most half-functional, ever-shifting, or long-collapsed into metaphysical sinkholes. Reliable mapping is impossible.
The skies above the Rift occasionally darken with falling corpses, flung from aerial conflicts or vomited forth by the plane itself.
History
Past battles leave behind haunted impressions in stone and sky. These emotional residues can bend perception, reroute paths, or drag the unwilling into phantom skirmishes
