Thernody

Ervenian Era, 1051 AB
Thernody is the domain of the death-goddess Kiaransalee, a place steeped in grief, silence, and hatred preserved like ancient perfume in a tomb. Once modeled after the ruins of her lost world, Thernody is a morbid echo of memory twisted into obsession. The plane serves not as a sanctuary, but as an eternal sepulcher, where the living are not welcome, and the dead are not allowed to rest.   Though nestled deep within the Abyss, Thernody is unlike its more chaotic neighbors. Here, order exists, but only the kind born of necromantic dominance and vengeful control. Time itself feels reluctant to move forward, as if the entire plane mourns something it refuses to name.   Thernody is not simply a realm of death, but of unforgiven remembrance. Kiaransalee does not rule through love or fear—she governs through memory. Vengeance in her name is sacred. Her followers are expected to avenge wrongs not merely once, but perpetually, keeping the wound fresh.   Unlike other Abyssal domains that revel in chaotic violence, Thernody is restrained, reverent, and patient. Its silence is not peace, it is mourning sharpened into obsession.

Geography

The landscape is barren and windswept, filled with marble ruins, shattered obelisks, and endless graveyards under a blackened sky. The wind carries the dry rattle of bones and forgotten laments. Black roses grow in cracks between the stones, bleeding ichor instead of sap.

Noteable Locations

The Palace of Dust
At the plane’s heart lies a hollow citadel carved of bone and veined obsidian. The palace is quiet as a mausoleum, save for the whispered commands of Kiaransalee herself, whose presence fills every shadowed hall.
The Tomb Choir
Rows of weeping statues sing with ghostly resonance, mourning the forgotten dead. Anyone spending more than an hour heremust have the will power or be compelled to join the lament, unable to speak above a whisper for 24 hours.
Gallery of Grudges
A spiraling tower of memory-tablets and name-slabs, each bearing the name of someone the goddess has not yet forgiven. The names shift subtly in the reader's vision, often reflecting someone they too have not forgiven.
The Ossuary Labyrinth
A maze made from stacked skulls and vertebrae, whose walls rearrange based on emotional resonance. Those who enter seeking vengeance are most likely to find their way to the center, where vengeance is tested.

Inhabitants

Only the dead can be trusted in Thernody.   Kiaransalee surrounds herself with petitioners and servitors that retain their essence in undeath. These include ancient mourners, phantom record-keepers, ossified attendants, and grim wardens. The living are seldom allowed entry without purpose—and none may linger long.   The realm is hostile to resurrection, meaning no soul willingly leaves Thernody once interred. Reincarnation spells and other soul-retrieval attempts targeting a soul in Thernody are blocked unless a divine artifact or greater wish intervenes.

Localized Phenomena

Access and Departure

Access is only available via deep necromantic rituals, death-goddess cult altars, or planar bridges hidden within grave-cities of the mortal world.   Departure from Thernody often requires an offering of grief or retribution. Some gateways only open after a name from the Gallery of Grudges has been ritually erased.
