The Limiters

Limiters can exercise some control over their morphology and it is thought that potentially this control can be wider ranging than that which has been observed since the Stability Council has been studying them.   In practice, what we see is that they present themselves in a vaguely humanoid shape which nevertheless varies significantly and can be changed over time scales of around a day. Interestingly, they often seem to copy one another, so that we see little "tribes" such as the ones shown at the top of the article. But these are tribes more of fashion than necessity.   The same copying behaviour which they exhibit in their own groups, is probably what constrains the range of possibilities we see in the Limit Lands where they are likely fishing for inspiration from neighbouring evolutions where humanity is dominant.   Two examples of alternative forms are shown below. These were both present on Magicians' End at the battle known as the Eviction.    

The Limiters are almost never found far from the Limit Princes and are usually confined to the Limit Lands but on occasion they will cross into other realms in support of their masters. Such was the case during the Limit Protectorate on Magicians' End when Limiter forces accompanied Prince Rygarde.

Limiter society is complex but tends to be structured around the Limit Princes with each prince having the fealty of at least one major sub-group. Furthermore, there are independent groups that do not serve any of the princes. Since the Limit Princes are in a near constant state of feuding with one another, only occasionally making opportunistic forays into the wider Discontinuum beyond the edges of the Limit Lands, this also means that Limiters regularly fight one another. Alliances are often temporary and shifting and it is a reasonable simplification to tie them to the politics of the Limit Princes.

It is considered likely that the Limit Princes themselves are a subspecies or a mutation of the Limiters, which has given them power over their ancestral species. The Limit Princes appear to have the power of immortality whilst the Limiters are decidedly mortal. It has been suggested that the relationship between the Limiters and the Limit Princes is not entirely unlike the one between Humanity and the Fey, at least in this one respect. It is a provocative suggestion but an unorthodox one.
