Eyries

Welcome to Solaris, traveller! This is a slower-than-light science fantasy set in our own solar system.
About Solaris | Guide to Solaris | Prologue
Few things are as iconically Uranian as the vehicle cities flying through the Aer. Eyries come in many shapes and sizes, from archaic airships, to cart-cities towed by skybeasts, to pollution-spewing motor-eyries, to modern flying fortresses powered by crystal engines. Each Eyrie is its own sovereign state, and form the core of most of Uranian society.

From Airships to Engines

The first eyries were wooden sail-based airships and were likely used to travel between islands. It was only as the construction of the eyries evolved and people were able to make larger, more comfortable eyries that they began to use the eyrie as a home base instead. The combination of migratory tradition and practical limits on growing food, eyries naturally developed a tendency towards raiding rather than trying to defend territory in an always changing enviroment.   Sails and skybeasts fell out of favour with the advent of motor engines. Fueled by the methane plentifully available in both the upper and lower reaches of Uranus, motor engines remained dominant for a long time. The transition towards crystal engines was slow, especially compared to other planets. With far lower auroral activity, aurorite is less plentiful than on Jupiter. Since early crystal engines were unable to match the sheer power of mature turbine technology in atmosphere, development of native Uranian crystal propulsion was abandoned.   Contact with offplanet people, and more importantly off-planet technology was what really brought crystal engines into relevance. Imported engines are sought after for their ease of maintenance and the prestige of owning such sophisticated technology. Alongside the adoption of crystal technology, sails have made a full comeback. It is now common to see sails as secondary propulsion, and some eyries have even adopted it as their main power.

Raider-Eyries

The eyries were foundational for the raider-culture of Uranus. With limited area and ability to carry cultivable soil, eyries struggle to produce enough to feed their population.   Supplementing food supplies with hunt can only go so far, and becomes increasingly impractical as eyries grow in size. While some eyries engage in trade with each other and with islands, many more simply take what they need. Eyries are always vigilant and always on guard, maintaining a cloud of scouts and lookouts at all times that watches for enemies or for targets.   Eyries have always been working to get an edge on their competition. Whether through experimentation with engines, defenses and weaponry, or getting a numbers advantage.

The eyries are such a cool part of your setting, I love them. I like the notes on how they were slow to transfer to crystal engines, and that some use sails!

Nicely done! I especially love the idea of sails making a comeback.

Thanks! I mean, who wouldn't want an excuse to put sails on everything, they're so cool looking!

Thank you! Uranus has been one of those lucky instances where things just naturally flow, I knew I wanted to lean into it as this endless sky, so course the people would be birdlike or cloudlike, there'd be floating islands and vehicle cities, and society would have to be more of a hunter society than a farming one just by the nature of their enviroment.

A lovely concept and one of the highlights of my reading this summer! I love the idea of each eyrie being its own sovereign nation in Uranian politics.

Uranian vehicle cities is a great enough concept as is, but to have uranian pirate vehicle cities?? Incredible!
