History
Dragonborns are among the newest peoples known in Tarnyk. As the children of Dragons and anthroests, it takes incredibly specific and improbable parentage for a first-generation dragonborn to be born. The first reports of dragonborns in Tarnyk come from an old journal dated back to 679 Before Union (BE). However, it wasn't until several hundred years later, in the year 323 BE when dragonborns first became a widely known to the people of Ayrath. They slowly began to incorporate in with the people's of Tarnyk and become a part of society, although many of the people of Ayrath feared them. (However, it is important to note that they were not feared for being draconic in nature, but because people thought they were a new form of tiefling that had made their way from The Under Realm. It was closer to the 100s Post Tarnyk Establishment (PTE) when the true origins of dragonborns would become known.)
Despite slow progress in their efforts, dragonborns eventually became an incorporated part of the wider society of Ayrath. While there was always some amount of anti-dragonborn rhetoric, come 67 BE dragonborns were even beginning to acquire positions of leadership in the communities that existed in Ayrath at the time. They would even go on to play a significant part in the founding of the nation of Dracosalus in the year 34 BE, where a dragonborn was even selected as the first Emperor of Dracosalus. But little did they know, the era of dragonborn acceptance in Ayrath was beginning to come to a close.
While it didn't seem like it at the time, the creation of the nation of Tarnyk was the first domino in the series of events that would lead to dragonborns being ostracized from society. By the time that Tarnyk was being founded, many of the anthroests of Ayrath had already found a home somewhere on the continent: The Gnomes and Halflings had moved to the South where the Littlewood Cluster now exists, the Tieflings had called The Under Realm home for a long time, and the angels lived in the sky. However, while dragonborns had a prominent presence in Dracosalus, they ultimately didn't have a nation that they as a people could consider their home. So, when the remaining peoples of Ayrath with no home nation came together to found their own nation of Tarnyk, the dragonborns were pushed to the side, left as the only people without a home.
Dragonborns continued to spread across Tarnyk. Some made the journey to Littlewood, others traveled to the then unexplored lands that would eventually become Excepiterra, and others still made their way over to Dracosalus where many of their kind had been for many years prior. But the more time that past, the less they felt welcomed by society, and the more isolated the dragonborns became. This set the stage for them to already be in a rough spot when the Great Dragon Purge began in 229 PTE.
To summarize, the Great Dragon Purge was caused by a fear of Dragons that had spread across Ayrath. The Great Dragon Purge lasted for 128 years, ending in 357 PTE, and only ended because it was believed that Dragons had been wiped off the face of the world. However, dragonborns were also a target of the Great Dragon Purge, as there was mass paranoia about the relationship between dragonborns and Dragons. Many rumors and legends about them spread across Ayrath during this time (most of which has been proven false), which led to the dragonborns being shunned by society, and some even going out of their way to hunt dragonborns the same way the people of Ayrath were hunting Dragons. Many dragonborns fled to The Under Realm, with a few making their way to Dracosalus, which secretly did not participate in the Great Dragon Purge. However, almost half of the dragonborn population was killed during the Great Dragon Purge, and the other half spread to the far corners of the map where they couldn't be reached.
In the time since the Great Dragon Purge, dragonborns have become a more prominent part of the Undre Realm's occupants alongside Tieflings and Drow and are a significant part of Excepiterra, but they have lost a significant amount of influence in Dracosalus, and very few have dared return to Ayrath.
