Dragonborns

Dragonborns are one of the least populus Anthroests in Ayrath and The Under Realm. Their history is brief in comparison to other Anthroests but is still filled with tragedy, as dragonborns are now on the outer fringes of society. Dragonborns are the children of Dragons and other Anthroests, and the children of dragonborns always carry the draconic features of their parents, even if they have a non-dragonborn parent. Dragonborns are typically percieved as having close relations with Dragons, but many are indifferent towards them or outright hostile towards them, like the rest of Ayrath. However, their reasons for their hostility are far different.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Dragonborns are among the largest of the different kinds of Anthroests, averaging at around 7'2 (regardless of biological sex). Dragonborns are very scaly, typically having thousands (if not tens of thousands) of small scales covering the entirety of their body. They have three-toed feet that typically have long claks at the end, as well as a heel made of keratin that resembles a high-heel shoe. Dragonborns typically have tails, although their shape and size varies wildly. Some dragonborns have horns, while others don't, and the size and styling of horns for dragonborns that do have them vary as much as their tails do. Dragonborns are among the most unique Anthroests in appearance, and are instantly recognizable, despite how wildly different they can look from one another.

Biological Traits

Some dragonborns are capable of growing hair, while others don't- the color of a dragonborn's hair is one of the few things determined by a dragonborn's Anthroest heritage, although whether they are capable of growing any to begin with is not.

Genetics and Reproduction

While dragonborns take on the body type of their Anthroest heritage, nearly every other characteristic is determined by the dominant draconic genes. One of the few things determined by a dragonborn's Anthroest parent is their hair color (although whether or not they can even grow hair is determined by their draconic genes). Even when a dragonborn has a child with a non-dragonborn Anthroest, the draconic genes still remain dominant and the child will be a pure-blooded dragonborn. The only way for there to be a true mix of traits between two parents for dragonborn children is if a dragonborn child's parents are both dragonborns.

Growth Rate & Stages

Typically, dragonborns reach biological maturity in around ten to fifteen years (with an average of twelve). However, they are not considered socially mature until closer to the age of 25- at which point most dragonborns begin a journey in search of a home as well as self-discovery.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Dragonborns are primarily a carnivorous species. They rely on meat to survive, and are naturally thrilled by the hunt for live pray. However, it is possible (yet difficult) for dragonborns to have a vegetarian diet, although it is not rewarding for them to do so, as the lack of meat in their diet can lead to immense pain and negative shifts in personality and emotion (as well as being incredibly expensive due to its reliance on little-researched medical sciences).

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

A dragonborn's nose is typically flat, with two small slits at the end, with their mouth sunken into their face. A dragonborn's ears are simply two holes in the side of their head, and their eyes are large, often having only a sclera and a pupil.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Dragonborns are widely spread across Tarnyk, with most living in the far corners in the map. Dragonborns were practically run out of the majority of Ayrath, and are rarely found in the nations that once made up the Tarnyk Union or in the Littlewood Cluster. Dragonborns are most prominently found in The Under Realm, but also have a strong presence in Dracosalus and Excepiterra.

Average Intelligence

Dragonborns are an incredibly intelligent race, even by Anthroest standards. Dragons have a photographic memory, which, when paired with their long lifespans, leads to a dragon possessing a wealth of knowledge to go with their hoard of actual wealth. This photographic memory is a trait Dragons pass down to their dragonborn kin, giving them a superior intellect to most non-dragonborns they come across. Several of the most important scientists in Tarnyk history have been dragonborns, despite their place in society.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Dragonborns have heightened senses from those of typical Anthroests- Dragonborns are superior with every sense Anthroests than most other Anthroests, with only a couple of specific examples. Some dragonborns are also more naturally gifted with some forms of natural and elemental magic, although not all are. The kind of elemental magic a dragonborn is proficient in (if any at all) is usually determined by the draconic parentage of the dragonborn.

Civilization and Culture

Major Organizations

Dragonborns have a significant prominence in The Under Realm, with many prominant political positions being taken up by dragonborns (even if the leader of The Under Realm, The Underking, is not). Historically, dragonborns have also been incredibly prominant in Dracosalus, with the majority of the emperors being dragonborns. However, in the past two centuries dragonborns have lost their prominance in the government of Dracosalus and have slowly begun to be less common within the nation as a whole. There is also a significant dragonborn population in Excepiterra, although they have never had much significance in the politics of the nation.

Average Technological Level

Dragonborn scientists are largely responsible for controlling fire in the context of warfare and for the discovery of gunpowder (and the development in gunpowder-dependant technologies).

Major Language Groups and Dialects

While many dragonborns speak their draconic ancestors' native language of Draconic Tongue, the most commonly used language among them is Common.

History

Dragonborns are among the newest peoples known in Tarnyk. As the children of Dragons and anthroests, it takes incredibly specific and improbable parentage for a first-generation dragonborn to be born. The first reports of dragonborns in Tarnyk come from an old journal dated back to 679 Before Union (BE). However, it wasn't until several hundred years later, in the year 323 BE when dragonborns first became a widely known to the people of Ayrath. They slowly began to incorporate in with the people's of Tarnyk and become a part of society, although many of the people of Ayrath feared them. (However, it is important to note that they were not feared for being draconic in nature, but because people thought they were a new form of tiefling that had made their way from The Under Realm. It was closer to the 100s Post Tarnyk Establishment (PTE) when the true origins of dragonborns would become known.)

Despite slow progress in their efforts, dragonborns eventually became an incorporated part of the wider society of Ayrath. While there was always some amount of anti-dragonborn rhetoric, come 67 BE dragonborns were even beginning to acquire positions of leadership in the communities that existed in Ayrath at the time. They would even go on to play a significant part in the founding of the nation of Dracosalus in the year 34 BE, where a dragonborn was even selected as the first Emperor of Dracosalus. But little did they know, the era of dragonborn acceptance in Ayrath was beginning to come to a close.

While it didn't seem like it at the time, the creation of the nation of Tarnyk was the first domino in the series of events that would lead to dragonborns being ostracized from society. By the time that Tarnyk was being founded, many of the anthroests of Ayrath had already found a home somewhere on the continent: The Gnomes and Halflings had moved to the South where the Littlewood Cluster now exists, the Tieflings had called The Under Realm home for a long time, and the angels lived in the sky. However, while dragonborns had a prominent presence in Dracosalus, they ultimately didn't have a nation that they as a people could consider their home. So, when the remaining peoples of Ayrath with no home nation came together to found their own nation of Tarnyk, the dragonborns were pushed to the side, left as the only people without a home.

Dragonborns continued to spread across Tarnyk. Some made the journey to Littlewood, others traveled to the then unexplored lands that would eventually become Excepiterra, and others still made their way over to Dracosalus where many of their kind had been for many years prior. But the more time that past, the less they felt welcomed by society, and the more isolated the dragonborns became. This set the stage for them to already be in a rough spot when the Great Dragon Purge began in 229 PTE.

To summarize, the Great Dragon Purge was caused by a fear of Dragons that had spread across Ayrath. The Great Dragon Purge lasted for 128 years, ending in 357 PTE, and only ended because it was believed that Dragons had been wiped off the face of the world. However, dragonborns were also a target of the Great Dragon Purge, as there was mass paranoia about the relationship between dragonborns and Dragons. Many rumors and legends about them spread across Ayrath during this time (most of which has been proven false), which led to the dragonborns being shunned by society, and some even going out of their way to hunt dragonborns the same way the people of Ayrath were hunting Dragons. Many dragonborns fled to The Under Realm, with a few making their way to Dracosalus, which secretly did not participate in the Great Dragon Purge. However, almost half of the dragonborn population was killed during the Great Dragon Purge, and the other half spread to the far corners of the map where they couldn't be reached.

In the time since the Great Dragon Purge, dragonborns have become a more prominent part of the Undre Realm's occupants alongside Tieflings and Drow and are a significant part of Excepiterra, but they have lost a significant amount of influence in Dracosalus, and very few have dared return to Ayrath.

Common Myths and Legends

Many myths and legends relating to dragonborns are not ones created by them, but rather ones about them that were created by others (of which the majority originated from other Anthroests during the Great Dragon Purge). While legends of dragonborns being able to cast elemental magic simply with their breath are based on a hint of truth, legends such as their "True Draconic Form," shapeshifting, and eating Anthroests whole have been proven as false in the last millenia.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Dragonborns have mixed feelings on relations with other Anthroests. Some view it as fine, believing that if they can find others who care for and respect them it doesn't matter what kind of Anthroest they are. However, due to dragonborns' unfortunate history with most other kinds of Anthroests, many fear other Anthroests and view them as a threat on default, leading to them being uncomfortable (at best) with relationships between dragonborns and other anthroests. Some dragonborn extremists feel that relationships between dragonborns and other Anthroests are unnatural and should not be allowed, with some even going so far as to hunt down and kill any dragonborns who have had relations with other Anthroests, as well as their partners.

Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Dragonborns come in a variety of colors, often matching (or at least similar to) that of their draconic heritage. The color of a dragonborn's child will always match that of the dragonborn parent unless both parents are dragonborns, at which point a dragonborn child has a color between that of their parents rather than simply matching one or the other.
Geographic Distribution
There are some non-dragonborn Anthroests who hunt dragonborns for sport. Some do it because after the purge of dragons from Greater Tarnyk, some parts of dragonborn bodies have become incredibly valuable to be used in the place of dragon parts for various purposes, and selling these parts can earn a person a lot of money.
