5th Respitesday of High Autumn, Second Age 1854: We undertook the initial trial within the sacred mountain shrine of Bri’Inis, a task missing from any written record in the histories of Eraneth, perhaps I could document this venture, be the first one to do so. The guardian, a former druid now manifesting as a barrier of trunks and branches in our path, presented a series of riddles requiring answers of Moon, Snow, and Mountain Streams. The intellectual rigor of decoding these enigmas was invigorating, revealing a sophisticated interplay of natural and divine symbolism, or the druid was simply bored at her post and used us for amusement. Guided by the guardian’s directive to follow the cold air and avoid forbidden zones, we proceeded with caution, mindful of the perilous consequences of defying divine edicts as noted in Eraneth’s spiritual traditions. We arrived at a chamber presided over by a winter tree spirit, its essence marred by the shadow realm’s influence, a phenomenon reminiscent of the corruption we encountered at Hithfaer’s old temple to Leowyn. A discourse on the nature of winter deities and the shadow plane ensued, drawing parallels to prior interventions. Our attempt to realign the spirit with winter’s domain was partially successful, necessitating the expulsion of emergent shadows. The successful restoration of the Scrolls of Araneth to their sanctified resting place triggered a teleportation event, returning us to the surface; a process I am eager to study for its arcane mechanics. We could use a system like that within Hithfaer's castle, whisking away unwelcome visitors upon a specified trigger.
We departed Bri’Inis on the 1st Qindirsday of High Autumn, arriving in Hithfaer by the 3rd Vaeraleusday of High Autumn, without maritime incident, allowing time for reflection on the shrine’s implications. Upon return, Isenara entrusted her detailed observations from Bri’Inis to Drin, anticipating his alchemical expertise might advance our efforts to restore the land’s vitality. She proposed exploring poisons, as usual, effective against undead, though Drin’s initial focus on explosive concoctions required redirection toward more precise methodologies, a discussion that enriched my understanding of his chaotic yet innovative approach.
Subsequent weeks were dedicated to alchemical pursuits in the laboratory. At Talindra’s behest, Isenara synthesized Elixirs of Life with commendable efficiency, securing a personal reserve as well. The production of Camouflage Dye and Soothing Elixir encountered challenges—unstable components in the former, likely due to its adaptive chromatic properties, and delayed shipments for the latter. Through careful improvisation, she overcame these obstacles, yielding successful batches.
My archival research into Sol Variar at Eglasil proved fruitless, a vexing setback. Zaelith and Talindra ventured to the summer and spring territories with the same goal. I'm hoping their efforts uncover the elusive truths of this group.
Concurrently, Isenara and I resumed experimentation with the dream tree sap, which exhibits promising properties; further analysis may illuminate its potential applications in arcane or restorative contexts. With her alchemical expertise and my knowledge of the magical, we will be able to put together a wondrous substance.
Zhyrissa’s agreement to accompany us to the masquerade is a delightful prospect, promising engaging discourse amidst the festivities. However, the Longest Night celebration was disrupted by an incursion of assassins targeting the Summer Speaker’s crown, a relic of significant cultural import. Their defeat revealed Luthais’s involvement, his taunting departure via teleportation highlighting a vulnerability in our defenses that merits scholarly investigation into anti-teleportation wards. I also wonder what specifically did he need the crown for. His goals continue to elude us, and as long as we don't know them, he will remain one step ahead, remaining a threat to our efforts here in Hithfaer.
Compounding the chaos, an uninvited Imperial delegation exploited the distraction to pilfer the chisel from our vault. Pursuit group of Zaelith, Malakar, Bahzel, and Daereth was successful at recovering the artifact, and I hope I will be able to interrogate the dead thief as well. The theft, highlighted our vulnerability to subterfuge and stealth attacks. An issue we will need to resolve if we want to become a power on the world's stage.
