Agiograph
Agiographs are a specialized type of Holograms that are able to simulate physical sensations. Developed by Horizons and making use of a specialized material known as Hard Light; Agiographs are not only able to render any visual in a physical environment, they're able to be interacted with.
History
Although Agiographs were fully realized shortly before The Withering came about, the research that went into their creation spans back a decade. They were developed in part thanks to already-extant research into having light exist in a physical constant, creating a material that's light and malleable. This material, known as Hard Light, became essential to the development of Agiographs.
Horizons began researching Agiographs as part of an initiative for long-distance communications and interactions, wishing to expand upon existing technologies for telecommunications and to accommodate individuals whom were wishing to live far away from civilization. Particularly, they saw the exoduses from cities and recognized government institutions as a need for concern. This, combined with the growing need for long distance assistance with medical needs and the like, resulted in Horizons putting heavy emphasis on research for communications technology. Anything further from that was simply seen as a natural evolution of what the Agiographs could do.
Agiographs were completed in 2027, and they were quickly rolled out to various medical facilities and homes. The technology, before The Withering, was also licensed out to various interested groups, such as game development companies and businesses. Of particular note, they were installed into the Standard Living Quarters that a good number of people were living in at the time, allowing for them to easily communicate with those across the country. Standalone display models were obtainable by civilians as well, though as of The Withering, obtaining these standalone models became difficult, with the prices for them ranging into the thousands.
Usage
Nowadays, alongside being used in hospitals and Standard Living Quarters; Agiographs can be found in various governmental facilities for meetings, research and educational facilities, entertainment venues for virtual singers and arcade games, and usage in brothels for long distance sex work. The versatility of Agiographs means that you can have displays composed of just about anyone or anything, whether it's a rendered environment or a person being talked to. Of course, most standard issue Agiographic Displays that are on the market, whether purchased through what little official channels there are or through underground networks making use of currencies such as F-STOP; are the only way one can get their hands on this technology.
Due to the fact that Horizons has gone into hiding, and the fact that there's not any value in attempting to prevent people from using this technology, independent research has been done by computer programmers and debuggers into learning how Agiographic Displays are made and utilized, which has contributed to it's eventual adoption by entertainment venues and brothels. In-fact, this research is how one such method in interdimensional communication between realms was achieved, making use of a specialized Node connected to a Gateway. It is still rather rudimentary and experimental, however, and as such, communications with this process have been shaky at times.
- Physical communication between long distances.
- Displays of environments such as skies, fictional cities, old locations that have been lost to time, ruins, etc, etc.
- Medical professionals being able to physically check on a subject without actually being there.
- Arcades making virtual environments to play in.
- Communication between realms
- Musicians both virtual and real being able to do live shows anywhere.
- Brothels using it for long-distance sex work.
