Craggy Coastal Plains

Great ridges and rock formations stand proud throughout the barren plains of the mainland, and the coasts are craggy and exposed to storms. The rocky terrain, stony soil, and windy weather render much of the kingdom unfit for productive farming without magical assistance. Although some arable lands have been cleared by a dedicated few, much of Cothique’s produce is imported, and its people tend to enjoy diets richer in seafood than is normal on Ulthuan.

Since ancient times, the majority of Cothique’s settlements have been coastal. Its cities are built high on cliffsides and dug down into the rock, built to weather storms and invaders alike. Magically reinforced glass stretches over the top of dug-in areas, allowing natural light and a view of the often-stormy skies above. On sunnier days, the walls of buildings in its whitestone cities are decorated with murals evoking the seas, heavens, and gods. Such artwork is intentionally ephemeral beauty, as Cothique’s harsh conditions soon wash the scenes away.

The kingdom borders the wild and forested realm of Chrace to the north, and the misty and mournful land of Yvresse to the south. Although its rocky plains resemble those of Yvresse, Cothique is windswept and dry, whereas the notorious fogs of its southern neighbour bring moisture and mud. The shrine of Vaul found to the north-west of Cothique is of particular importance to its neighbours, as the priests there possess the skill to shape and repair ithilmar. Even farther north is the Blighted Isle, Altar of Khaine, and the legendary Widowmaker, whose baleful influence, some say, stretches all the way across the sea to reach Cothique itself.
