Ashsteel Commune

A monastic order dedicated to the Efreeti Ignazz, this secretive sect is based in the relatively unknown village of Toun located deep in the Djinndarri territory of the Sunrathe Wastes.

These monks bring hard work and pragmatic mining practices to the desert, although some of the deep desert dwellers would say that they instead bring wanton destruction and hateful religious zealotry.

Structure

The Abbot→Prior→Sub-Prior→Cellarer→Sacristan→Guest Master→Novice Master→Infirmarian→Librarian→Choir Master→Rank and File

Culture

One of subservience to the will of Ignazz, as interperated by Cruce Sybill.

Public Agenda

To gather the raw materials for the forge.

Assets

They own and operate the entirety of Mournshade Mines. Toun is entirely owned and populated by them.

Demography and Population

They are almost entirely human.

Territories

Military

They train in the martial arts as part of their religious education.

Religion

Anyone not worshipping Ignazz as a god is in very serious danger in Toun.

Foreign Relations

They do not, technically, have foreign relations.

Laws

  • All Flames Serve the Forge. No one owns what they wield. No one owns what they make. All labor, all yield, and all breath are for the Forge and the Flame.
  • Personal property is forbidden. Tools, clothing, even ideas, belong to the commune.
  • Silence Guards the Flame. Speak not of Toun. Speak not of the Ashsteel. The Forge must remain hidden, or its fire will die.
  • Secrecy is sacred. Revealing the commune’s existence or purpose is a sin punished severely—often by immolation.
  • None Rise Above the Ember. Rank is for the world outside. Within the Ashsteel, all stand equal in ash.
  • A strict internal communism. Titles like “Brother,” “Sister,” or “Emberhand” exist, but denote function, not power.
  • The Flame Does Not Rest. Idleness is rot. The fire burns always, and so must we.
  • Everyone works. Shift rotations are rigorous. Meditation is scheduled like any other duty.
  • Sparks Must Be Tempered. Anger, pride, or hunger for the world’s gold will melt the steel of the soul. Cool yourself in service.
  • Emotional outbursts or ambitions toward personal gain are seen as weaknesses to be purged through extra labor or fire-fastings.
  • Fire Burns Impurities First. If any among us is found false, let them burn before the Forge.
  • Betrayal, blasphemy, or contact with the outside world without sanction leads to ceremonial execution. Informants are praised.
  • The Veins of the World Are Ours to Bleed. The desert yields only to the faithful. We bleed the earth so the Flame may live.
  • Mining is sacred labor. The metal and ash drawn from the desert are not just resources—they are sacrament.
  • The Emberhand Speaks Flame. When word must leave the Ashsteel, it leaves in the mouth of the Emberhand. None else.
  • One member is chosen as the singular contact with the outside world. Unauthorized communication is a capital crime.
  • Death Is a Kindling. When we fall, we feed the Flame. Let no corpse leave the commune. Let no name be mourned above the breath it gave.
  • Dead are cremated immediately. No tombs. No family. The identity of the whole is more important than the individual.
  • The Fire Will Rise When the World Is Cold. Await the signal. Burn in silence. When Ignazz calls, we will rise, ash-winged and steel-bound.
  • A doomsday clause—when the outside world collapses or the Etched ascend, the commune will emerge, fully armed and fanatically prepared.
  • Agriculture & Industry

They grow their own hemp and wheat, and import the rest from Rhô. They make distinctive pottery, weave colorfully patterned cloths, and collect Tazrim from the desert, but their biggest focus is mining desert iron from The Mournshade Mines in order to make Ashsteel.
