What is a Nicoll-Dyson beam?

  A Nicoll-Dyson Beam is an immense superweapon that requires so much power to operate that a Dyson Sphere is built around it to power it. Most of the Dyson sphere energy is routed to an antimatter energy storage unit. When it needs to be used, the antimatter is annihilated and the resulting blast focused into a tight beam which is sent down a wormhole created by a device similar to an IGWD. This blast is powerful enough to destroy a planet or, alternatively, an entire star system when on a higher setting. Larger targets require the nicoll-dyson beam to charge for longer though.   Most major factions (except the Tranal Nomads and Nomads of Dawn) have the ability to construct Nicoll-Dyson beams. Minor factions can too, but it is often more efficient for them to construct regular Dyson spheres rather than the Nicoll-Dyson beam. They can be difficult to construct as the megastructure must be able to support the massive barrel that is very visible from orbit. This is often done through graviton wave refraction and extremely powerful active supports. Although the IGWD requires Hypermatter to function, most Nicoll-Dyson beams also have massive particle colliders to create it. Furthermore, a Nicoll-Dyson beam cannot destroy a star system protected by a Stellar Shield.   Although galaxies are often comprised of quadrillions or even quintillions of stars, a nicoll-dyson beam will not destroy a galaxy in a reasonable timeframe (before that can happen the star it is built around will die). Due to this, the destruction caused by one is not extremely massive on the Galaxy Cluster scale, but it can make for an extermely effective precision strike superweapon. Due to this, more valuable systems can be targeted making them more valuable than this first factow would normally allow. This can cause them to be extemely deadly so the political implications of use are significant.   As just a single use can cause trillions of deaths, there are many groups within many factions that actively protest against constructino and use of these superweapons.
