Aegon III Targaryen, also known as Aegon the Golden, was the seventh Targaryen king to sit on the Iron Throne.
He succeeded his mother, Rhaenyra I Targaryen, at her death, which happened in the year 160 AC, after 30 years of reign.
He's the oldest child of Queen Rhaenyra and her Royal Consort Daemon Targaryen and has four other younger siblings, Viserys Targaryen, Baela Targaryen, Rhaena Targaryen and Visenya Targaryen.
Like his siblings, he's a dragonrider and his dragon is Stormcloud.
At the start of this story, in 136 AC, he marries his long-promised betrothed, Lady Daenaera Velaryon, with whom through the years, he will have four children: Laena, Rhaena, Baela and Daeron.
Appearance and Character
Among his siblings, the Crown Prince set himself apart as the least reminiscent of his father. Aegon, unlike Viserys and Baela, bore little of the audacious and flamboyant traits that defined Daemon. His striking, elegant features, eyes of a deep, near-black purple, and hair so pale it bordered on white were all strikingly reminiscent of the famed beauty of his mother, Rhaenyra, in her youth. During his childhood, this notable divergence from his father's visage became fodder for his mother's detractors, who insinuated the legitimacy of his birth. During Viserys I's reign accusations of bastardy were not uncommon in the Red Keep, but they never dimmed the undeniable Targaryen essence that clung to him. Although often referred to as the 'Golden Prince,' a moniker stemming from his childhood habit of donning a golden cloak, Aegon seldom wore ostentatious jewellery. He preferred silver over gold and dressed in soft, light hues or shades of grey, which complemented the striking scales of his dragon, Stormcloud, and created an air of romantic dreaminess that echoed his true personality. With long, elegant fingers, he stood taller and leaner than his younger brother, Viserys, who possessed a more muscular, tanned physique. This would change following the Conquest of Dorne when he spent nearly two years on the battlefield under the unforgiving sun. Aegon demonstrated remarkable intelligence from a young age and excelled in any endeavour he applied himself to. He became an exceptional knight and a masterful archer. However, unlike his father, who relished war and battle, the Crown Prince's nature favoured diplomacy over intimidation. He wielded his sword, Blackfire, sparingly and preferred to resolve issues through dialogue. Baela regarded her older brother as valiant, honourable, and embodying the qualities befitting a king, while Viserys lauded his determination, deliberation, sense of duty, and single-mindedness. Although his cheerful disposition painted him as a joyful young man, his upbringing on the dark and sombre Dragonstone left an indelible mark on his soul. He often chose solitude, finding comfort and tranquillity in his chambers rather than the vibrant but noisy corridors of the castle. When the weight of his duties pressed too heavily, he would take to the skies on the back of his dragon, Stormcloud, departing the capital for Dragonstone, sometimes accompanied by Baela. When the weather didn't permit, he sought refuge in the Red Keep's library, where he immersed himself in ancient scrolls detailing the Valyrian Freehold and its history, a subject that had fascinated him since childhood. Though Aegon was generally solitary, he cherished the company of family and friends, particularly Addam and Alyn Velaryon, his father's former squires. He, like his charming mother, seized every opportunity to reciprocate the fondness he received from the royal court to the commoners. A core facet of Aegon's personality was his unwavering loyalty, particularly to his fiancée and then future wife, Lady Daenare Velaryon. Unlike his brother Viserys and his friend Alyn Velaryon, known for their frequent visits to the city's brothels, the Crown Prince's gaze and affections never strayed from his beloved wife. This extraordinary fidelity could be traced back to their mutual fondness, which had grown since their earliest encounter as children. Despite Aegon's well-known devotion to his beloved fiancée, it didn't deter several women from attempting to capture the Crown Prince's attention, perhaps harbouring ambitions to be in Lady Daenara's place one day or hoping to bear his illegitimate children, with the dream that one of them might inherit even a fraction of his charisma.Social
