Su-mehr Qiamp

Su-mehr Qiamp    Locations      Su-mehr Qiamp
Dearest Jehenette,   I've arrived at Su-mehr Qiamp at last! The paintings hardly do this city justice. The Mehr River is a deep blue this time of year, speckled with red and orange strands blown over from the grasslands. It's strange to see the ancient architecture of our homeland shored up with the modern style of Usharay, but the effect isn't unappealing. It feels representative of this whole city: Modern people living on in the presence of the dead.

A Haunted City

The city of Su-mehr Qiamp is the only known region of the world in which ghosts are real. They manifest as memories of the dead or as the displeasure of the living. Legends claim this spiritual phenomena is a curse for not paying proper respects to the region's patron god, a deity of time, causing humans of the region to be trapped between present and past.   When the city was under the control of the Okueran Regency, this disruption had led to the city atrophying. By the time the Usharay Divinity claimed the region in the Battle of Rights, the once-thriving city had dwindled to a few hundred of the most stubborn. They were experts on the land, on the flooding of the Mehr River, and on how to handle ghosts.   In exchange for their expertise, Usharay allowed them to keep their land. Their descendants remain in the city to this day, and the city's Seers still use knowledge they provided on how to handle ghosts both living and dead.

Dusk Spirits

After someone passes to the next world, those they left behind may see their lingering spirit. This ghost is no more than a memory. They act and speak as they did in life, but can't form new memories or react to novel situations.

Dawn Spirits

In exceptional circumstances, a living soul may detach from the body. These disembodied spirits haunt the city, and can only be seen by Seers. The host survives in a coma, but will die in days if the soul isn't returned to them.

Though most can't see ghosts, their presence is part of life in Su-mehr Qiamp. To lifelong residents, it's hardly more notable than the weather. Despite residential opinions, the curious, the religious, and the scientific alike find themselves drawn the mystery of the city. Artists seek inspiration, doctors aspire to cures, mourners long for answers, and the devout hope to become Seers themselves.

Trivia

In Old Sunesh, "Su-mehr" refers to the southern portion of the Mehr River, while "Qiamp" was the word for a trade city. "Su-mehr Qiamp" would literally translate to "the trade city on the bank of South Mehr River."

A Historical City

If the city's hauntings are a curse of time, its architecture is representation of it. Many ancient roads, buildings, and other structures remain from Okuera's hold on the city. Repairs, expansions, and newer buildings have since been done in modern styles native to Usharay. The city is a patchwork, and a single home might be both 400 and 40 years old.
No painting could have prepared me for the smells. One street smells of freshly-baked bread and not two blocks over I'm gagging on miasma from dye makers. Everywhere is the fish-and-algae river smell combined with the indescribable scent of the Seers.
— A letter home
While the architecture shows distinct origins, the cultures have become inextricably tangled. In the decades since the Battle of Rights ended, the city's population has bloomed to a respectable mid-sized, with residents from both sides of the border. Most have adopted bits and pieces from both cultures, mixing dialects with remnants of Old Sunesh into something uniquely Su-mehr Qiampian.   Most residents will always complain that - despite the city's theaters and libraries, the markets and food, the culture and vistas - tourists only ever care about the bloody ghosts.

Notable Sights

Little Mehr
This offshoot of the Mehr winds its way through the city. During the Festival of Halinn, it's decorated with a woven canopy. Visit during the dry season and you row a boat under it to enjoy the view.
City Hall
One of the oldest buildings, City Hall has had numerous repairs over the centuries. The city's history is literally written on its walls. One wing is now a museum pairing ancient artefacts with modern counterparts.
Riverbank Stage
This amphitheater hosts shows nearly every weekend, from local musicians, to traveling actor guilds, to student presentations. A board at the entrance lists all upcoming performances, updated weekly.

Notable Residents

Mayor Gerrart Borruf
Tall and lean, Gerrart has the pale skin of his northern homeland and the gaunt face of someone who's endured more stress than is healthy. Most Qiampians despise him for being a loyal Usharayan appointee, but the ones that work with him have found him more reasonable than expected. There's some hope they might be able to get him to see other perspectives.

There's a rumor that he was assigned to Su-mehr Qiamp as punishment, but nobody's been able to find proof. Yet.
Baker Madlen Choard
The owner of Sunshine Bread is the city's favorite baker. Her loaves are some of the best money can buy, and her laugh is positively infectious. She personally knows about half the city, down to remembering their children's birthdays.

Merchant Imayne Joett
Described as small and mousy, Imayne is a strange pick to be the new head of the city's merchant's guild. They have the dark skin and kinky hair of Qiampian natives, but few know more about them than that. It's made many worry about the future of the guild.
