Seer

Su-mehr Qiamp    Metaphysics      Seer
Dear Jehenette,   I met a seer today. Their hair was in a silk wrap with a sheer fabric veil over their eyes. They had a smile as warm and beautiful as the brown of their skin. We talked over coffee and despite my intent to learn more about the seers, the conversation ended up mostly about me. I parted feeling like the veil isn't just to cover the dark of their eyes, but perhaps to form a wall between them and the people they serve. Perhaps that makes it easier when later seeing their ghosts.
— A letter home

Spirit Healers

Seers are a specialty profession unique to Su-mehr Qiamp. Officially, they're a branch of the religious professions, akin to priests, but practically, they fill a space of their own. They're the only people who can see all ghosts, thanks to an ointment they adorn across their eyes. Their role is to handle the city's hauntings.   The seer philosophy is that ghosts of all types are due to an inability of the living to reconcile past and future with the present. In order to resolve a haunting, one must tend to the soul of the living.

Responsibilities

  • Visit sites of alleged hauntings to verify the haunting and classify the ghost
  • Prevent harm to the living from tormented and vengeful spirits
  • Aid Dawn Spirits to return them to their bodies before they die
  • Find the source of Dusk Spirits to close their connections with the living
  • Collect testimony from Dusks of the murdered
  • Collaborate with detectives, grief counselors, and others to end destructive hauntings

Tactics

Seers often work in mentor-apprentice pairs. They first aim to contain the spirit so it can't cause harm, then gather information to provide a resolution.

Containment

Three river stones placed in a triangle around the spirit will form a containment barrier the spirit cannot cross. The stones must be smoothed from the currents of the Mehr River and placed no more than 10 feet apart.   A clear and loud tone, such a from a bell or tuning fork, can stun or confuse spirits for a few seconds. Which tone is most effective varies with the spirit, and often one seer is charge of causing this sort of distraction while the other places the stones.

Resolution

Once the danger has passed, seers gather information in order to find a resolution. The type of spirit defines the information required, but it's commonly summarized as a Who, a What, and a How, with answers coming both spirits and living.   This step often takes days, which in the case of dawn spirits, puts them on a very tight timeline to save someone's life.
Dusks
  • Who is holding the dusk here?
  • What ties the dusk to that person?
  • How can their conflict be eased?
Dawns
  • What is distressing them?
  • How can their problems be solved?
  • Who can effect those solutions?

Tools

Time Unguent
A poultice rubbed around the eyes that enables one to see ghosts.
Suspension
Techniques used by physicians to keep a comatose patient alive for longer.
River Stones
If placed in three points around the spirit, it can form a containing cell.
Bells/Tuning Forks
If in the right tone, a clear and loud sound can briefly stun or confuse a spirit.
Incense
The right scent can help calm the living, whose cooperation may be needed to dispel the spirit.

Trivia

Most Seers get their veils and headwear from the same local artisan, who's made a lucrative career out of the work.   Figuring out the right tones or incense is commonly cited as the most difficult skill to learn. There often aren't clear signs to know which is right.

Uniform

Seers have active jobs - traversing the city to locations of hauntings, and handling dangerous situations caused by distressed spirits. As such, their clothing is often simple and practical. Like most professions, they wear an armband with the insignia of their career. Unlike others, they have a particular scent and often wear veils.

Armband

Seers' red armband bears the insignia of a symmetrical eye. In the regional culture, the up-river eye looks to the past, and the down-river eye, the future. The symmetry represents seeing both at once.

Scent

The ointment they apply to their eyes has a unique, though not unpleasant, scent. Only verified seers are able to purchase the ointment, and while some perfumes get close to the scent, none get it exact.

Veils

The ointment stains even the darkest of skin tons, leaving the skin around the eyes dark brown or even black. Some find this disconcerting, so many seers wear short veils to put others at ease.

Social

Within Su-mehr Qiamp, seers are well-respected as the only ones who can resolve the hauntings that all residents experience. However, their association with death and the unknown also leads people to fear them. Seers experience what nobody else does, things they often have to keep confidential, and they end up existing at the fringe of society as a result.
Where those in other professions can remove their armbands and not work for an evening, a seer's eyes will remain stained and their vision attuned to spirits. Their continual work with death, loss, grief, and hopelessness changes them and often makes it harder to relate to others outside their profession.   To help cope with the emotional toll, seers are encouraged to take regular vacations outside of the city. However, places that don't experience hauntings can be less accepting. Some communities resent the reminder of death, or take offense to the lingering scent of their ointment. The seer office maintains lists of locations along the Mehr River that tend to provide more restful experiences.
I saw Luon at the bakery today. I nearly called to him to ask how he was, then I remembered. I've only spoken to his dawn. The real Luon has no idea who I am. I understood then why they say being a seer is lonely.   We know people's most intimate fears, but they don't know us.

Notable Seers

Master Seer Emlyn Fuera
Despite what her graying hair would have you believe, Emlyn shows no signs of slowing down. She's led the seers for twenty years, and wears the armband of her profession as proudly as she does her Okueran tattoos.

Few have complaints about Emlyn, but much about the city has changed in twenty years. Many would like some change among the seers, too.
Initiate Seer Malkyn Tilotta
Malkyn has never gotten below a perfect score in his life and he's not about to start now. He's determined to become one of the city's best seers, no matter how much work it takes.

Journeyman Seer Elisot Moss
A first-time mentor, Elisot has their hands full trying to explain to their apprentice, Malkyn, that there is no perfect score in being a seer. There's rarely a single correct answer.

A very interesting, lonely profession. I think the idea of being a Seer would be much more appealing than the actual job. Also ew no thanks I wouldn't want to put things in my eyes xD

I hope you have a great day!   Explore the endless planets brimming with life of the Yonderverse! Go after creatures, discover new places, and learn about the people you find along the way.   Come prep for Summer Camp with me!

To be fair, you put it around your eye rather than directly in it! (Not much better...)

Definitely a job that the idea as Mochi points out is more appealing in many ways than the actual job. However the job is quite an important one, very important it would seem indeed. They are well prepared however, that is something I respect of any profession that has honed and passed down its craft. The various tools and their unique applications shows us that. Clearly a strong tradition within the field, passing down knowledge from one generation to the next, as it should be. The fact that it is an apprenticeship craft reinforces this and also only makes sense, I can understand the benefit to this. Well written Rin, a great article :)
