Dragons
The dragons of Novidera were there long before the The Great Engine's fall. And have awoken in the midst of the elemental chaos left in the world after the ancient's disappearance. The reason for their return is often linked with the change in the world's environment caused by the ancient's fall and the rise of the new civilizations. It has been said that they arose because they feast on fear and unrest however this theory is mostly just a legend. The more probably reason is the tectonic shifts in the crust has reopened an ancient passageway and the dragons are free to roam the surface again.
Today the dragons tend to nest in mountain ranges particularly ones that correspond with their species. As an example the ocean-scaled dragons tend to nest in volcanic island chains or in coastal mountain ranges. While a terrestrial species like the Southern bark-wing, may have nests in forested regions or on the top of Floating Islands above forests.
Dragons are communal by nature and mate for life having a small family with about 1-2 hatchling in their family. Some dragon species may have more or less children but generally it is no more than 5. Dragons do become very territorial becoming defensive when there are other dragons nearby who are not in their immediate family. They become particularly aggressive towards dragons of other species. With some species hunting other species of dragons of different species even if they are outside their territory.
Most dragons have little care for the sentient creatures of the world only becoming defensive is a settlement is in close proximity to their territory but they will generally keep away unless provoked. However due to their size, Truffleborn airships have been attacked on several occasions by dragons finding their appearance similar to a dragon and thus an enemy.
Because of the Nines Republic relentless expansion and industrial focus dragon territory is often encroached on leading to several battles between the two. Some laws and rulings have been put in place to supposedly protect the dragons but these laws only apply to the more powerful dragons, leading to much land being claimed in lesser dragon territory and often leading to those dragons getting slain or pushed out of their land.
The Onyxscaled have a very high view of the dragons, often going as far as to call them sacred creatures believing that after death you may be reincarnated as one. They tend to be especially protective over the dragons being very displeased with how they are treated in the Nines Republic. This is one of the only things that the Onyx and the Foxian agree on leading to a slight mutual respect for each other.
