Cygnus

Welcome to Solaris, traveller! This is a slower-than-light science fantasy set in our own solar system.
About Solaris | Guide to Solaris | Prologue
The body of the great swan tears the very heavens; it whispers and grasps at us. At the very tip of its wingspan something flinches.

Author's Notes

The constellation Cygnus is associated with several figures, like Zeus (who transformed himself into a swan) and other mythical figures who were transformed into swans (Orpheus and plentiful guys named Cygnus). It's also considered one end of the Great Rift: a dark band of cosmic dust that spans much of our night sky. One of the first radio galaxies we discovered was in the Cygnus region, and it is one of the closest sources of radio waves. As for our flinching foe, in the northwest of Cygnus, the Fawaris side, is the blinking planetary nebula.

I would like to fold this note into a tiny paper swan and very delicately eat it. 10/10 will read again.

Your ability to hook people with just a few sentences is scarily impressive.

I love how this is written. Just the right amount of creepy (even though there is a scientific explanation).
