When a crystal infestation takes root in a spacecraft, it is like the ship is possessed. Survivors describe animated cables strike out at crew, lights turned up blindingly bright, and a constant disharmonious chime. Thankfully, infestations are very rare.
Crystal Infestations are much rarer than other infestations like Paradisius and Cosmic Blooms. Without many cases to study, the causes are poorly understood. In a few cases crystal infestation was traced back to an errant seed crystal. In others the causes are less concrete, with theories ranging from a poorly maintained engine to crystals themselves getting sick.
The leading theory is that the crystals are reacting to oortic influence. Evidence for this is mostly found in the changes to the crystalline structures onboard. Crystals affected by crystal infestation appear more similar to oortite. The most infamous incidents are believed to have set out with aurorite or mined crystals that had not been properly adapted for space.
Progression
The first signs of a crystal infestations are random power spikes and outages. Advanced cases can take over the entire ship, corroding parts of the ship, animating wires and causing them to grow like weeds.
Survivors of crystal infestations describe a constant auditory assault as the warped crystal song reverberates through the hull.

The first time anyone experienced this must have been horrifying. Assuming power spikes were an electrical issue only to start hearing strange echoes throughout the ship...
