Maurice Williams (a.k.a. Maverick)
Something weird had to have happened. It was 38 degrees outside but Maurice was burning hot, he couldn't bear to put a coat on. As he walked down the street he got sideways glances from nearly every passerby as he traveled in just a sleeveless shirt. He was still in shock about how the flames grew so high when he turned on his oven just a few minutes ago, and even more baffled at how he wasn't burned in the slightest.
He took his lighter out of his pocket and flicked it on. Holding it out in front of him and keeping his other hand closer to himself, he twisted his hand and watched as the flame contorted to match the motion he had made. Testing his growing theory, he slowly moved his hand back and forth and watched as the small blaze left the lighter as it moved with his hand.
Maurice wasn't at all sure how it came to be, but he could now control fire.

Personal history
As a child, Maurice Williams grew up in the Kindle District. He went to school in the Kindle District like all of the other normal children and that was all he ever wanted to be, just a normal child. But life had other plans for Maurice.
In 2002, around the time Maurice turned 16, there was an earthquake which shook the entirety of the small island Dustria City stood upon. Small portions of the city were decimated by the quake. In particular, the suburb in the Kindle District where Maurice lived. Among the entire neighborhood, there were numerous casualties. Included in those casualties were Maurice’s parents. Maurice and his mother had been trapped by a support pillar in the house and his father used all of his strength to get Maurice free and get him out. His father went back into the house to save his mother, but the house caved in soon after and neither one came out. The bodies were found by rescue workers an hour after the quake stopped. Maurice could not bear the sight and so he ran. He ran to the only other place he knew, his school. He spoke with his art teacher, Mrs. Howard about the whole ordeal and she pulled all of the strings she could to make it so Maurice could stay living in the school up until his graduation. Upon which Mrs. Howard and all of the other teachers Maurice had become friends with raised enough money for Maurice to enter into a local art competition.
The winner of the competition would be admitted to the Circum University of Arts. Maurice made all of his teachers proud and won the competition by a landslide. He proceeded to astound everyone in university with his art skills and by the end of his time there, decided to return to the place that saved his life. He became the new art teacher at Kindle High School after Mrs. Howard had passed away. Maurice vowed to save the lives of his students through art and compassion the same way the teachers there had saved him.
In 2016, he received a letter from Gemstone Industries, inviting him on a one time only tour of the entirety of their headquarters. He was one of seven citizens in the city chosen at random to be invited, so he accepted. By the end of the tour, he was given a special ring with an Amber in the face. He was never able to return to his quiet life after that. A few hours after returning home he turned on the oven to make dinner, but was met with a much larger stack of flames than it had ever produced. He fell backwards and the flames were gone when he looked back. He opted for take-out that night instead.
Over the course of extremely careful experimentation in the next few weeks, Maurice came to the conclusion that he could now control and create flames and that he never felt cold anymore. He kept this under wraps for the time being. One evening he went for a walk in downtown Dustria City. On this walk he heard an explosion, a jewelry store a few blocks away had burst into flames. He arrived at the same time that a man with this blue metallic skin was leaving the building. Maurice summoned forth all of the focus he could and in one explosion of emotion brought down the flames engulfing the building. When he looked back up he saw the blue man kicking off the side of a fire hydrant and being assaulted with highly pressurized water.
He woke up the next morning in the hospital with a note from the Chief of the Dustria City Police Department to come to the 17th Precinct the next day for a job opportunity. He ignored the offer and went back to work at the high school as usual. The same day he was approached by a woman named Elizabeth Walters who claimed to know everything that was going on with Maurice. She explained to him that she had the powers to read minds and that the powers were derived from an Amethyst ring she received from Gemstone Industries. She then explained that his fire powers came from his Amber ring and that there were numerous people sighted with special powers just after Gemstone Industries released their first set of new rings. Seven individuals to be precise, including the two of them. Maurice then told her about the job offer from the DCPD and brought her along to the 17th Precinct. Sure enough, the Chief of police, Richard Briggs was waiting.
As fate would have it, one of his best officers also had a ring which gave her powers. He offered Maurice and Elizabeth jobs as the start of a task force made specifically to deal with individuals with ring-based powers. Elizabeth accepted immediately but Maurice struggled with the decision. He did not want to abandon all the students he had come to know so well at the school. After days of contemplation he accepted the job and secretly resigned from his teaching position, thinking it best for the students to not know how much more danger he would be exposed to from then on. Over time Maurice and Elizabeth worked together to find more people they called Ring-Bearers and recruited several to join their team such as the scientist behind the rings, Alexander Rite, as well as Thomas Jones and Neil Sanders.
