Venn
Pronunciation: VEN
Map Index: D-5
Location: Southeast coast of Aorlan
Description: The kingdom of Venn, situated on the southeastern coast of Aorlan, stands as a land of gently rolling tree-covered hills.
Residents: Venn's population, dominantly composed of humans of Arn descent, also contains a small number of humans of Kishari descent. Small bands of Varynn visit Venn in their wagon trains, particularly in the colder months of winter.
Primary Population: Arn
Secondary Population: None
Minor Population: Ceodari, Chuuli, Garuun, Kharg, Kishari, Shenn, Valtauri, Varynn
Government and Politics: Venn's king is a greedy, strong-willed, and narrow-minded ruler, disregarding the concerns of neighboring kingdoms and dismissing attempts by the Valtauri to resolve their grievances peacefully. His actions have sown mistrust and animosity, leading to strained relations with Linde Lothtaur, Pelarr, Waelor, and Shaniss. Consequently, these neighboring countries have grown reluctant to offer aid to Venn in the face of potential large-scale attacks from the perilous Tauramarth forest as well as assisting them with fighting off the scourge of piracy. Despite its challenges and poor diplomatic standing, the kingdom of Venn maintains its strength through its resilient military, determined to protect its interests, even as it navigates the consequences of its ruler's actions and strives to coexist with its elven neighbors.
Economy: The small realm of Venn, relies heavily upon its wood-based economy for prosperity, producing furniture, tools, and boats. The kingdom boasts several large water-powered sawmills that contribute to its economic sustenance. However, this focus on tree havesting has created tensions with the Valtauri elves of Linde Lothtaur, as Venn's logging activities often encroach upon elven and faerie territories, leading to conflicts and strained relations.
Military: Venn’s cities are predominantly built out of stone and fortified with sturdy defensive walls to repel invasions. In the countryside however, most towns and villages are made of wood due to its great abundance and the lack of nearby stone quarries. With incursions from Tauramarth, The Forest of Doom an ever-present threat, there are wooden palisades surrounding most population centers, no matter how small they are.
Despite its shortcomings, Venn possesses a robust and well-supplied army. Led by capable commanders, the military boasts numerous foot soldiers and a few companies of skilled longbowmen, though it lacks a significant cavalry force. To further aid in defense, most cities, towns, and villages have a local militia that can garrison the defensive walls until the army can arrive. The western frontier is fortified with strategically placed forts to safeguard ongoing logging operations from dangerous humanoids including faeries, and monstrous creatures emerging from the evil dark forest of Tauramarth, The Forest of Doom.
History: Venn's history traces back to the time of the Great Cataclysm when its human inhabitants sought refuge after their eastern homelands were lost beneath the waves. Unfortunately, Venn has suffered historically from poor leadership which has stunted its development compared to its more advanced neighboring kingdoms.
Today: Venn remains viewed by its neighbors as a stubborn and uncooperative nation that cares little for international relations and insists on doing things its own way. This holds back its economy and creates a high demand for government investment in its military. Tensions with their elven and faerie neighbors to the west are near to war as Venn pushes aggressively westward claiming new lands as their own.
