Waelor

Pronunciation: WAY-lor

Map Index: D-5, E-5

Location: An island in the southeast coast of Aorlan

Description: The Kingdom of Waelor, situated on a large island off the coast of southern Aorlan , possesses abundant natural resources, while maintaining a strong sense of harmony with nature. The island's geography divides the island into two parts. On the lightly inhabited eastern shore, dense maritime forests cover the land while on the western side of the island, many bustling ports host most of the kingdom's population. This disparity exists due to the abundance of safe harbors on the west side of the island that stand protected from waves by the barrier islands. In the east, the great rolling waves of the open sea crash into rocky cliffs with nowhere to safely dock a boat.

Residents: The people of Waelor, predominantly humans of Ceodari heritage, have ancient roots on the island, dating back to the time before the Great Cataclysm when it was still connected to the Aorlan mainland. The Ceodari share the island with a small number of Shenn halflings, refugees from the sunken land of Shenn’valea, who live on the sound side at the southern end of Waelor. Despite dwelling in separate towns and villages, the Ceodari and the Shenn have always coexisted peacefully, bound together by a shared philosophy of living in harmony with nature.

Primary Population: Ceodari, Shenn
Secondary Population: Varynn
Minor Population: Arn, Kishari

Government and Politics: Waelor's governance is decentralized, with a council of elders electing a thane to lead them. The villagers enjoy significant autonomy in their local affairs, with the thane and council intervening only in matters of island-wide importance, such as defense against external threats.

Waelor maintains strong alliances with its neighbors, particularly with the Shenn halflings from the neighboring island of Shaniss, as well as the kingdoms of Pelarr and Denos on the mainland to the north. However, relations with the nearby kingdom of Venn are strained due to the arrogant and antagonistic nature of its ruler.

Economy: The islanders primarily sustain themselves through fishing and cultivating medicinal herbs, which they export to other kingdoms. Gardens hold a special place in the hearts of Waelorian inhabitants, who spend much of their time tending to them with reverence.

Military: To defend their island, each village possesses a local militia. Skilled in archery, their great prowess with bows has led to many orc raids being swiftly repelled by hails of arrows. They also have a small navy that has thwarted many pirate attacks on local shipping. They are also aided in their defense of the island by druids who wield power divine magic.

History: Prior to the Great Cataclysm, the island of Waelor stood connected to the mainland of Aorlan and had only a few Ceodari living there. When the great tradgedy struck, refugees from other areas arrived on the newly created island and made it their home. Fortune smiled on the inhabitants as the destructive chaos storms did not pass this far north and spared the island.

Today: The Kingdom of Waelor, a rural and close-knit society, cherishes its natural surroundings and fosters an interconnectedness with neighboring communities.
