Shaniss

Pronunciation: SHAN-is

Map Index: E-5

Location: Southeast coast of Aorlan

Description: The island of Shaniss is a secluded haven of Shenn halflings located in the Gulf of Shenn'valea. It is the sole remaining remnant of the fabled valley of Shenn'valea, which tragically sank into the depths of the sea during the Great Cataclysm. The lightly settled eastern half of the island is dominantly used for pasturing sheep. Its ocean facing coastline has large rolling waves and steep eroding cliffs making it poorly suited for harbors. However, the western side of the island, sheltered from the ravages of the sea, contains numerous bustling port towns nestling in protected coves.

Unlike their kin farther north, the Shenn halflings of Shaniss have embraced the water, becoming skilled boat builders and fishermen. Their dwellings, carefully crafted into the earth, are surrounded by well-tended gardens.

The settled part of the island resembles a vast landscaped oasis, with the Shenn halflings' gardening skills transforming it into a picturesque haven of green grasses and carefully pruned trees and shrubs. Flowers abound nearly year-round in carefully cultivated beds while the green turfed roofs blend into the landscape.

Residents: The island is occupied almost exclusively by Shenn halflings although a few humans are commonly found in port towns.

Primary Population: Shenn
Secondary Population: None
Minor Population: Arn, Varynn

Government and Politics: A thane governs the island’s inhabitants, maintaining order and harmony on the island. Appointed by the Great Council, the Thane's term runs for 5 years, after which they can be reappointed or a new thane chosen.

Shaniss maintains strong bonds with the humans of the neighboring island of Waelor, fostering a close relationship that promotes cooperation and trade. The two islands often exchange goods and resources, strengthening their resilience and prosperity.

Shaniss has also wisely forged alliances with the kingdom of Pelarr to the north and the coastal cities of Soreilia to the south. These strategic partnerships have led to increased protection for the island kingdom and increased trade with their merchants. Through mutual defense agreements and shared intelligence, Shaniss finds greater security against the threats of piracy and orc raids while the increased trade benefits everyone.

Economy: Shaniss's economy thrives on fishing, shipbuilding, wool, and trade. The islanders preserve their abundant fish with salt, selling it to merchant ships that frequent the port. Renowned for their boat-building prowess, the Shenn halflings craft exceptional vessels.

The island is also famous for its production of fine quality wool which the industrious inhabitants weave into warm garments or sell raw by the bundle.

Military: Due to piracy and savage coastal raiders, the islanders have formed militias for self-defense. Despite their small stature, Shenn halflings exhibit exceptional archery skills and are masters of concealment, often surprising the barbaric orc raiders from Kraal with swift and deadly ambushes.

History: The Shenn halflings lost most of their precious land of Shenn'valea during the ravages of the Great Cataclysm. The earthquakes wracked the land and most of the beautiful valley that the Shenn lived in sank under the sea. Many drowned but more were able to reach high ground. When it was finally over, only a small portion of their original land remained. Many of the Shenn set out northward looking for a new home. However, many remained behind and founded the peaceful island paradise that is Shaniss.

Today: Shaniss remains a sanctuary of resilience, resourcefulness, and natural beauty amidst the ever-changing tides of the Gulf of Shenn'valea.
