South Etorea & North Sea Coast Railway
The South Etorea & North Sea Coast Railway (SE&NSCR) was one of the smallest and poorest railways that preceded the nationalisation of the railways of Etorea in 1919. It was formed in 1864 when George Lovejoy and Arthur Buckley put foreward a proposal for the line which was passed on the 9th April the same year. Another one of the founders of the line was John Addams, a local businessman who had coal mining interests in the area.
Construction of the railway began in 1865 with the station, sheds and locomotive works being constructed at Tarnmouth, with the quay following the next year. The company offices were also "built" with them being purchased from the then owners of the Tarnmouth Printing Company which had gone into liquidation the year prior. Following the arrival of №s 1 - 3, engineer's trains made the construction of the small railway quciker and the opening of it had come four years earlier than expected.
The railway was opened by Grand Duchess Constance Bonneville in 1868 to much fanfare, she is also reported to have ridden on the footplate of №2 during the return journey instead of her specially built Royal Coach. Apart from № 1 - 3, almost all of the SE&NSCR's locomotives were obtained from Beyer, Peacock & Company in Manchester, England.
