SE&NSCR №s 1 - 3

South Etorea & North Sea Coast Railway №s 1 - 3 were the first three locomotives built for the SE&NSCR. They were part of the AB&R Standard Goods locomotives which, although intended for goods services, were used on all duties during the first years of the company's life.
The order was personally placed by George Lovejoy at Hawes, the site of the works later became one of the National Railway Museum's sites. The locomotives were deilivered in 1867 and ran engineer's trains until the railway opened to the public in 1868. From there, they ran mixed trains due to the lack of locomotives availible to the new company but later ran on goods trains after the arrival of №s 4 - 9. They were also used on shunting duties until the mid 1870s when five tank engines were ordered form Beyer, Peacock to take over shunting. №s 1 - 3 were in revenue earning servie until the summer of 1905 when they were withdrawn and religated to engineers trains, specifically ballast trains.
Due to their age and the fact they were weaker than even №s 10 - 14, they were all withdrawn between 1911 and 1913, with the last being scrapped at the SE&NSCR's own works at Tarnmouth in July 1914.
