Sage Bateleur is an Elf of The City and practicing Wizard, working as the head of the Department of Magical Maintenance within the Ministry of The Wall.
Appearance
Sage stands at 6ft tall, with a fit, lean, muscular build. Long blonde-white hair down to shoulder blades, a touch wavy. Long blonde goatee down to nip height, thin and comes to a sharp point. Fu Manchu mo down to chin height. Pointed elven ears. Row of earrings in left ear, starting very close to the point.
Occupation
As head of the Department of Magical Maintenance, Sage is tasked with ensuring the magical elements of The Wall are in order. In reality this means managing a small number of managers who in turn manage a large number of underlings who do very basic ongoing maintenance, and generate a mass of reports that make their way back up to Sage.
Sage would also be responsible for the more significant magical repairs or undertakings, but so far has never been called upon for anything more advanced. This could be attributed to the diligence and quality work of his department, or the stability of The Wall.
Magic
As a member of the relatively small elf population of The City, and an even rarer direct descendant of the founding magicians, Sage is one of the very few formally trained and practicing magic users within The City. While there are many that can perform very limited and basic magic as instructed, he is among the small number who understands and can utilise the theories of magic to achieve a wide variety of effects.
His magical ability, as advanced as it is compared to almost all of the population of The City, is still somewhat limited and amateurish in the eyes of his considerably more advanced father, Phillipe Bateleur.
Relationships
Sage's family can trace their lineage back to the founding of The City and to the magical mastermind of The Wall, Malick Maga. This has afforded them a certain amount of status throughout history by name alone, but also means they have a naturally occurring and strong affinity for the arcane arts.
His family's lofty status, his high ranking position, and the exposure to almost exclusively officious persons of The City means that Sage has been fairly isolated in his life so far, with limited leisure time and high expectations.
Sage's father, Phillipe, is the current Minister of The Wall, was instrumental in unifying and forming the current incarnation of the ministry, and has held the position since its creation. They have an often tense relationship, with Phillipe being a very private and reserved person, and has a difficult time showing his love and support.
While he wouldn't share it with anyone, he is of the belief that Sage should be and is capable of being a far better wizard than he is. He will not, however, allow his son to occupy any lesser station, even if he doesn't believe he is technically qualified.
Sage's relationship with his mother, Maya Bateleur, is far less fraught. While she shares her husbands belief that Sage could achieve much more, she is not shy in providing her support and affection, and takes an interest in all aspects of her son's life rather than just professional and magical.
The family's majordomo, Eglisia Gagnon, serves as a kind guiding hand and shoulder to lean on for Sage, as he has been for his father. He is sympathetic to Sage's professional, social, and familial situations, afforded with the outside but well situated perspective that he is.
Sage's assistant at the Department is Rosalie Perkins. She is a steady hand and dependable confidant for him, having learned his habits and shortcomings swiftly, and adapted deftly to handle both Sage and the Department appropriately.
Thanks to his recreational interest in certain herbs, Sage has made the acquaintance of local herbalist Ash.
Much to Sage's chagrin and confusion, one of the workers of the Department of Mechanical Maintenance, Flint Embercoil, has on multiple occasions attempted to discuss a number of seemingly unnecessary or overly complicated mechanical devices with him.
