Magical Surge

At first it feels overwhelming. You can't breathe, you can't see, hear, and all you can feel is pain. It only last a few seconds, but that initial shock is like nothing else I've ever experienced.   After the pain subsided, I looked down at my arms. A vibrant purple liquid flowed through my veins, and strange markings began to take shape along my arm. They cut deep into me, like a knife. In just a few minutes these archaic messages sprawled across my arm, up my neck and around my chest.   The tips of my fingers glowed a bright purple, and so did my eyes. My hair morphed into this shimmering shade of grey with a purple sheen. I looked in the mirror and barely recognised myself. But it felt... right. I had earned this power.

Magical surges is when an excess amount of magical energy takes over the body. This condition is not unique to any specific type of magic - the effects are also (typically) temporary, but may affect individuals differently.

Too many magical surges causes severe scarring in the body. Scars appear where veins throb with magic, blindness can occur, and a loss of other senses are frequent. Many resemble tattoos, with gracious carvings on the skin.

Causes of Magical Surges

There are countless causes of magical surges, both intentional and unintended. Consuming or applying some form of material is the most common way to induce a magical surge, as it can be controlled. Approaching and making contact with leylines is a rare method, often avoided as the sheer amount magical energy can overwhelm even kill a person.

Power Fruits

Pop-up mages commonly provide power fruits, a collection of hundreds of fruits all with the ability to induce a magical surge.

This classification is only known and used by sorcerers, witches, wizards, and other magic practitioners. The average person would not find a similarity between stormsurge sugarcane and a glassfiddle pea.

Leylines

Leylines are streams of magic that flow throughout realms. They pierce through realm walls, distributing magical energy from other realms by passing said energy through its course.

They are invisible to the average person, but one well-versed in magic can see a leyline. They rhythmically pulsate with energy. Approaching a leyline as a magic practitioner will cause an intense magical surge. Entering one, and following its flow, will fill you with so much energy you simply cease to exist.

Realms

Entering a realm of a magic you frequently practice causes a magical surge. This surge lasts the time you spend in this realm, as well as time it takes for the magic to dissipate after leaving.

Permanent Surges

Obscura

Obscura, a witch found in her own secluded realm, is the most skilled master of magical surges. Many people go to her to be blessed with their own permanent surges, giving them a perpetual power boost.

Nurturing and channeling a magical surge throughout your body for hours on end can cause it to have permanent effects. A highly trained sorcerer can control the surge, guiding it throughout the entire body to spread out and dampen its effects. Scarring still occurs and there is always a risk of fatality, but with enough care and attention the surge can remain permanent.

This everlasting surge feel like a constant tingle all over the body, some describe it as a vibration. However it is described, all can agree that it is an extremely pleasant feeling.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAA THAT HURT YOU MOTHERFU-
Calm yourself down or you can leave. It's been five seconds.
H-how long do we have left?
Six hours.
  ...oh.

I'm a sucker for magick having consequences Mochi, its like my weakness. Risks and consequences, there should never be such a thing as free power, I find that so uninteresting in worldbuilding, so I'm a sucker for this. I love this concept. I certainly must tuck this away for later, in hopes that more information about this will be understood at a later date. I have so many questions and a deep fascination. Can this risk be mitigated like via talismans or other methods? Are there warning signs or is it more just sudden onset type affair. Can you avoid it whilst still utilizing magick? Why does this happen, like is this a situation of 'mortal body not meant to handle this much raw energy/force?', or more a hostile response almost primordial to the powers of creation basically being manipulated by a single mortal, arguably something that should offend the senses. Does it always manifest physically, can it manifest psychologically?   I do adore the concept though, I always have been a sucker for magick coming with a risk/reward analysis instead of straight upside, so I love this a whole lot :)

thank you so much! While magic is very powerful in the Yonderverse, there are massive risks for the strongest of spells and things. My vision for this is a sudden onset, like your entire body is being electrocuted but it feels good - until the magic is too powerful, then it kills you.   I think it can manifest psychologically in a way too, but there are always physical changes. Like, the veins on your arms, legs, neck, and everywhere will glow, eyes change colour, stuff like that. And the changes will all differ based on the magic, too!   You can definitely avoid this. You can just not eat the fruits that cause a magic surge, leylines are very hard to come across, and very few people cross over to other realms. And very few people who *do* visit other realms will experience a magical surge, because it's only reserved for masters of the craft.   You've given me lots to think about, thank you! I'll definitely be working on this article more before SC ends <3

1) Do people do this on purpose? If so, what benefits does it give?   2) Why does type 3 magic surge only happen to experts? I thought it would be more of something that happens to novices (inexperience with the magic), but maybe it's an attraction thing?

I love the scars that look like lightning scars!
