Pop-Up Mage

Shit... it's still following me. I'm going to need a pop-up mage, aren-

Someone call for me?

Ugh. It's you.

Damn right it's me. You still owe me from last time. Are you ready to pay for that?

Does it look like I can pay for that right now?! I'm being chased by a shadow demon. Do you have any salt candles?

Of course I do, I have everything. Like that box of amethyst beads you needed last time. Thaaaat you still haven't paid for.

Shush, I will pay you back when I can. Now please help me!
— Sorcerer and a pop-up mage

Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, if you need magical assistance, summon a pop-up mage! These inter-dimensional wanderers are well equipped to handle any and all magical situations.

Their services come with a price, however. If you don't have money, they may demand you provide them with materials and ingredients for their potions and spells. If you have neither, you are now in debt. Don't fall in debt with a pop-up mage.

Inter-Dimensional Travel

I put a little pink bow on my realm-ripper.
— Pop-up mage

It takes a lot of practice to be able to navigate the depths of dimensions. Travelling from one to another is a struggle and requires great power. There are several ways to accomplish this, and pop-up mages use a specific kind of inter-dimensional travel to allow them to zip to specific realms.

Pop-up mages carry a realm ripper, a special wand with the ability to tear through dimensional walls. A mage must have a personal connection with their realm ripper or it will not listen to their commands. You can build up this connection simply through using it, and providing the wand with words of affirmation, even if it tears into the wrong dimension.

Aw, darling, that's not quite the dimension I wanted to go to, but you're doing a good job! I really wanted to go to a tropical dimension, and you see how this one is on fire? This is not quite what I want. Next time, I'm sure!
— Mage training her realm ripper

Loneliness

Alyssia, the Wanderer

Alyssia was the first pop-up mage. She wanted to help everybody in need, inventing the first realm ripper to take her through infinite dimensions in her quest.   Unfortunately, she lost her freedom in the process. Driven insane by her loneliness, she cursed others with this lifestyle to keep her company.

Loneliness is unfortunately one of the biggest downsides to becoming a pop-up mage. Sure, you meet all manner of people from all walks of life, but forming a bond, a connection to someone is truly impossible. Working as a pop-up mage means you always encounter different people each time you are summoned, unless someone falls into your debt.

After becoming a pop-up mage, the memories of your existence are forgotten in the minds of your loved ones. Anyone that has seen your face will forget who you are, and your existence is tethered to you and yourself alone. You are now nothing. It takes a certain kind of person to become a pop-up mage, and unfortunately few get to choose this lifestyle; it is thrust upon whomever Alyssia, the Wanderer, chooses.

Items & Resources

Explore the map and click on different objects at the stall to learn more! Or read them down below.

A list of commonly kept items or interesting resources great beneficial to a pop-up mage. Each stall is different from the next, a mage tailoring her stall to her strengths as a sorcerer. Whatever is displayed on a stall is just a fraction of what each mage has to offer - every pop-up stall has an entrance to a pocket dimension, where spare material is stored.

Pop-up Mage Stall

Animal Feed

Some animals or inanimals require specific foods to calm them down from an aggressive state. Any pop-up mage has all the best feed.

Apparel

Various apparel such as necklaces are commonly worn by witches. It is a staple in how they dress, and often have magical benefits.

Brainmite Queen

Brainmite Queens have a number of uses. Consuming one nullifies debilitating mental afflictions and unlocks Cerexebrum, a state of mind beyond sophontic emotion.

Condensed Stars

Condensed stars are used to store supermassive amounts of energy to be siphoned at any time.

Feathers & Fur

Feathers, fur, hide, and other animal-related materials are crucial in countless potions.

Knick Knacks

Part of being a witch, mage, or sorcerer, is having far too many useless magical items that you literally cannot get rid of - they become tethered to you.

Magic Candles

Magical candles have wicks made from certain materials to give different coloured flames. Each flame, combined with a unique wax, has specific magical properties.

Potion & Spell Recipes

Any good witch forgets one or two spells. The most important ones are usually stapled or tied to their pop-up stall, as a quick reference.

Pride Flags

Most witches are queer, or a very strong ally. Often you'll find rainbows or other pride related flags sprinkled around pop-up stands.

Skeletons

Skulls and skeletons, while predominantly for decoration, serve many uses for zoomancers.

Stone Tablets

Stone tablets are one of many ways to cast spells. Engrave a stone tablet with a cryptic message, and cast your spell.

I adore this and Mochi the map/image is immaculate. Its perfect, it is adorable, informative, and just so fun!! I love the sass in the quote in the beginning too, absolutely I would expect no less from such a 'service'. Their history is equal parts tragic and fascinating of course, being created and now 'cursed' to become this from the first. Could Alyssa perhaps be the progeny article??? Mayhaps who knows that would certainly be a unique spin upon that prompt, and I've no doubt you could make that quite the article in tandem with this, for they do sound like an interesting character with quite the story behind them!   A fun, happy article but with its own deeper implications, and a stern warning we should all listen too absolutely. For to be in debt to a being with this sort of magickal power would seem....at best a questionable life decision. Well written again my friend, and most certainly getting tucked among my happy collection :)

Unfortunately, since I'm trying to keep all of my SC entries separate from each other, Alyssia won't be my progeny article, buuuut I have something MUCH darker planned >:) <3

The interactive map is so perfect, I love it so much. I mean, your work is always amazing, but this was just over-the-top great. I love the concept and I fell in love with the introductionnal quote.   I like how you present both side of the coin, and how heavy the weight is. Great article !

I love this idea. Don't think I would want to be in debt, though - probably a terrible fate, knowing you :)

Does anybody ever come in contact with Alyssia? Maybe just like... kill her? Although definitely easier said than done---probably don't want to mess with any pop-up mage, let alone the original pop-up mage (who, if time flows differently depending on which dimension you're in, could have had hundreds of thousands of years to practice mage stuff), although you might be able to gather multiple mages to fight Alyssia at once. I would pay a lot of money to see a full on mage duel across the dimensions.

I also spotted five cat-lookin critters on the stall image

I don't think I want anyone to be able to find Alyssia >:) I think I want pop-up mages to be "unkillable", fate prevents them from dying by any natural, or supernatural means. Only the most obscure methods could kill a pop-up age, and next to nobody could ever know how to achieve that. It's giving me more ideas to add to this article!   You spotted them all! :D

I can see that---if someone tries to kill them they could just blip to another dimension (do realm rippers cause damage?), and of course vitamancy can cure old age and cancer and stuff, but what about suicidal mages (which are surely not all that rare)? If one TRIES to die, can they?

Jul 12, 2025 10:15 by Mochi

Hmm, now that I'm thinking, I wonder if the only person capable of killing a pop-up mage is Alyssia. Since she can curse people, maybe she can relieve them of it, and relieving someone of the curse kills them. :O
