Chronomancy

Chronomancy is the magic of time. One of the most profound and powerful fields of magic, chronomancy is feared for its consequences. Typical chronomancers can only alter their own flow of time, but with enough time and practice, one can control time itself, for all things in the Yonderverse.

Utility & Usage

Visions & Seers
A classic use of chronomancy is to observe the future, without altering it. View future events, while your existence remains tethered in the present.
Rewriting Time
Altering past and future events by replacing it with an artificial event, manifested by a chronomancer.
Temporal Stasis
A common spell cast by chronomancers is temporal stasis. Whatever the spell is cast upon is suspended in time. The object will not age while in temporal stasis.

Natural Order

The Natural Order is not to be messed with. Timelines should not be reversed or altered, and doing so has devastating effects. Decay must follow growth, and death must always follow life. Reincarnations are a crime against the Natural Order.

Various entities around the realms of the Yonderverse are in charge of maintaining the Natural Order. Time Wards are inter-dimensional soldiers who's sole presence is to fix mistakes in the timeline. Other inanimals aid in this mission, such as floral wisps.

Temporal Reign

Temporal Reign is the ability to control time for all things in the Yonderverse. The effects of chronomancy is usually limited to the user, but Temporal Reign breaks this boundary and has universal consequences.

Temporal Reign is one of the most dangerous powers. Higher spirits and entities intentionally wipe out those that achieve this level of power, to prevent them from making too large a wave in all of existence. No person in existence currently possesses Temporal Reign, but a number of mythical items and artifacts supposedly do. The Book of Chronology is one of those items - it requires a reader to utilise its powers instead, and it has none.

Users

Chronario

Chronario by Mochi
Very few creatures in the Yonderverse have innate chronomagical powers, chronarios being one of them.   These tiny slugs use their long antenna to reach into the Time Dimension and slow down the flow of time. It allows them to escape predators by slowing down their existences, so the slugs can slither away at their own pace.

Chronomancy is a surprisingly popular magic to practice, despite how dangerous it can be. Few ever learn more than the most basic spells, granting them a few extra minutes in their day to account for lost time, or to reverse their own timeline for a couple extra bites of one's food.

Chronomancers are careful not to distort time too much, else Time Ripped is an unwanted risk. The curse is one of the most psychologically torturous, one's existence torn between the past, present, and future, experiencing all life events at once, simultaneously.

Pirit Merpe

Pirit Merpe is the most infamous chronomancer in the history of the Yonderverse. Practically every witch has heard of the Time Ripper, and his desire to control all timelines that drove him insane. His thirst for infinite power was so strong that he never felt the effects of being Time Ripped - either that, or he had lost his mind to the point where Time Ripped was nothing more than a minor inconvenience.

His mission led him to write the Book of Chronology, a catalyst for extracting more power. A hundred copies of these books were created and spread across the Yonderverse, preying on weak-minded chronomancers.

History

Chronomancy has always been a magic people have feared. Timekeeping is a practice seen by all sophonts in the Yonderverse, and any threat to that has supermassive consequences. Not just for sophonts, most organisms perform some kind of timekeeping. The Yonderverse itself is designed to follow strict timelines, and fracturing this causes utter destruction.

Thankfully, only a handful of cataclysmic, timeline shattering events have occurred in the past 640 billion years. Given the nature of these destructive events, they are never forgotten and the memory of them still lives on to this today.

Storm that Shifted Time

A hundred billion years ago, the future and the past were dragged into the present, setting off a chain of events that caused thousands of galaxies to fall under the rule of the Everae Empire.

The effects of the storm were reversed by time wards, inter-dimensional beings designed to fix timeline tampering. The storm itself was supposedly caused by a chronomancer blessed with Temporal Reign. Despite this devastating incident taking place a hundred billion years ago, it is still mentioned presently. There have been other destructive events caused by people with Temporal Reign, but none come close to the devastation of the Storm that Shifted Time.

Galactic Stasis

Thousands of years ago the citizens of the Navillan Galaxy went to sleep peacefully, and woke up imprisoned. The Avallai, powerful technomancers and chronomancers, once held the entire galaxy in Temporal Stasis in order to construct the Border.

The Navillan Galaxy is ruled over by the Avallai, controlling who enters and exist the galaxy. Outsiders have no idea what may hide within the small galaxy. Nobody has ventured past the Border and returned alive.

Very interesting. I'm feeling a little inspired by this, maybe I'll write about some Jumpers in Jerde this coming year, or do something in the Tread of Darkness. I don't love using time travel, though. You've written it really well so far.

Lilliana Casper   I don't comment much, but I love reading your articles! Please check out my worlds, Jerde and Tread of Darkness.

I'm so glad I could inspire you! Time travel is not my favourite thing to worldbuild, but I've really enjoyed fitting it nicely in my world and giving it some major consequences >:)

' to reverse their own timeline for a couple extra bites of one's food.' Um, best use of time magic ever. I also love the slugs. Best slugs. Colourful slugs. I pet.

Time magic!!!! I love time magic!!!!
I love natural laws that are enforced by other beings, instead of simply being unbreakable. It makes magic like chronomancy much more powerful and dangerous (and fun to think about)!
