Battle at Yorsin's Pass

The Battle at Yorsin's Pass was the legendary encounter between the great dragon Yaren and a party of around one hundred villagers and soldiers led by Perir of Naderā and the first battle of the Dragon War, following the Freezing of Naderā earlier that same day. The battle is notable for being the first known usage of Dragon's Bane, which itself was the first and only known usage of magick before the Witch's Curse.

Background

Tensions prior to the battle had been rising between various factions within the Dragon Order and those outside for several years, which eventually culminated in the disrobing and execution of Saresh of Naderā that was personally ordered by Inver for preaching views contradictory to the Order's creation myth involving Inver and Areksa. In the aftermath of his execution, Saresh's son Perir, also a dragon priest in Yandasard, began preaching similar ideas based on his writings. Perir too was disrobed, but fled the city before he could be executed, and traveled to his home in Naderā.

Anticipating retaliation against his village for his heresy, Perir had planned to evacuate the village to save his family and friends. However, one of the villager's Perir trusted, now known as the Betrayer, sent word to the Dragon Temple of his arrival.

Perir however was able to successfully convince the villagers to leave their homes to avoid death to Inver, and fled north.

Freezing of Naderā

When Inver had received word that Perir had arrived in Naderā, he traveled to the village to destroy it in order to kill Perir, unaware that the village had been evacuated two days prior. Upon arriving, Inver blew the village away and encased it in ice before returning to Yandasard.

Battle

The party of a hundred or so villagers had traveled for two days northwards before reaching the Borseas, where Perir had planned to go through Yorsin's Pass. Having been searching for Perir for several days, the great dragon Yaren incidentally encountered the party at the Pass.

Yaren initially did not recognize the party as the one he was looking for, he believed it to be a merchant caravan and was intent to move on. However, the villagers, fearing he had recognized them, fired arrows at him. While not instantly hostile, Yaren hovered above the ground for a moment to analyze the group. Realizing it was the villagers of Naderā, he beat his wings and flew higher to prepare to breathe fire upon the group to end the engagement early. While Yaren was turning to make his run of fire, Perir unwittingly casted Dragon's Bane and Yaren came crashing to the ground where he battled the villagers before being slain by Perir.

Legacy

The battle came to be widely known throughout the continent as it was the first known instance of the death of a dragon, especially since it was at the hands of a humanoid. It eventually became the first battle of the wider Dragon War that dissolved the Dragonreign and caused the extinction of dragons.
