Free Republics Of Draconis

The Draconis War and Signing of the Draconian Treaty (ca. 1000 BDT - 0 ADT)

To the east of Mirkvale Forest lie the peaceful republics of Free Republics of Draconis. Once a region of constant warfare, rampant banditry, and unstable governments, the four cities of Baldocinella, Krell, Barekbaal, and the Holy City of Fallach were locked in near-endless conflict. These wars, fought over resources, trade routes, and control of the Sacred Mt. Draconis, lasted for nearly 1,000 years.   In the year 0 ADT (After Draconian Treaty), the Great Wyrm Qaradin intervened. Emerging from the lands south of the Barrens, Qaradin used powerful magic, his enormous body, and his destructive breath to level the once-mighty Mt. Draconis. Upon the mountain’s charred remains, Qaradin issued a decree:
"Either unite and live as brothers, so you may defeat [...] else be lost like my brothers and sisters were."
After this declaration, Qaradin disappeared. Some believe he traveled to the legendary Cove of Heroes, where mythical figures rest, or returned to his brood beyond the Barrens. Following Qaradin’s intervention, the leaders of the four cities signed the Draconian Treaty, proclaiming the Free Republics of Draconis. The treaty also standardized the calendar and coinage, a system adopted by much of the world.   ---

After the Draconian Treaty (0 ADT - 250 ADT)

Building of Drake Citadel and the First Archduke

The early years of the Republic of Draconis were marked by tension. Without a leader, capital, or unified identity, mistrust lingered between the cities. This culminated in the Rebellion of 20 ADT, when the captain of the Fallachian Holy Dragoons attempted to assassinate the leaders of all city-states during the Four City Conference in Fallach.   The attack was thwarted by Duke Evonius Krell, who defended the Holy Temple at great personal cost, losing his arm, eye, and many of his guards. In response, the cities signed the Fallachian Resolution, calling for the construction of a capital citadel on the site of Mt. Draconis and creating the title of Draconian Archduke. The resolution also laid the foundation for the Draconian Congress, establishing that all four cities would vote on the election of the Archduke.   Archduke Krell "The Unifier"became the Republic’s first Archduke. Renowned for fostering Draconian identity, Krell visited each city, adopting elements of their culture. His Royal Crown of Draconis symbolizes this unity, crafted from Krellian steel, adorned with Baldovinettian jewels, lined with Barekbaalian fabrics, and featuring the Fallachian sword. Though he began construction of Drake Citadel, Krell passed away three years before its completion.   ---

Succession Crisis and Modern Draconis (251 ADT - Present)

The Succession Crisis and the Draconian Congress

The death of Archduke Alek the Impotent in 250 ADT without an heir sparked the Draconian Succession Crisis. Political unrest gripped the cities, leading to widespread conflict. Amid this chaos, scholar Edrahil Mablung penned the The Need for Representation of the Cities on the election of their future , a 2,000-page argument advocating for equal representation in the election of Archdukes, the creation of a legislative body, and the establishment of a common judicial system.   The thesis gained traction among citizens but was met with resistance by city leaders. Supporters of the movement were arrested in some cities, such as Bhalbaab. The turning point came when a dwarven friend of Edrahil, known only as "the Beardless Dwarf," threw the thesis at Doge Giovanni Fariduring a training exercise. The resulting concussion confined Fari to bed, where he read the thesis and became a passionate advocate.   In 256 ADT, Fari and advisors from all cities presented the Draconian Constitution at the Four City Conference. After days of negotiations, the leaders agreed to the constitution, which removed themselves from the Archduke election process, established the Draconian Congress, and created a Supreme Court. Doge Fari was elected Archduke and ruled until his death in 300 ADT.

The Modern Era

Since the adoption of the constitution, Free Republics of Draconis has enjoyed over 300 years of peace. The Republic has become a hub for magical research, artistic pursuits, and economic growth. Now, Draconis looks outward, founding a city on the central continent of Hydra to connect the world’s disparate regions.
