The Entering District

The Entering District is the area on the west side of the Entering Bridge. This area is bordered by the Guarding Canal on the east and runs to the Opadajacy Canal on the west.

Demographics

Because of its closeness to the Wagon Yards many halflings that do not live in Fourcorners or Backbank live here. Other inhabitants include a smattering of gnomes, a few unusual immigrants from other species. The majority of inhabitants are human.

Most of the inhabitants are working class, either employed in the wagon shops across the Opadajacy Canal to the west or working in the Depot to the north west. They consist primarily of trades people or laborers, with the smattering of small business owners, who have shops in the district.

Defences

The principle defense of the city lies in the drawbridge over the Guarding Canal. This is typically staffed by members of the Overwatch. A sending stone allows communication with the Dividing Wall and Entering Gate.

Industry & Trade

Most shops in the district cater to the working class lifestyles of the inhabitants. The Drought and Iron, a local tavern owned by the dwarf Tymin Falbrain, is a hub of local gossip and socialization. There are a number of other small general stores and bodegas in the district. Most inhabitants travel to one of the markets in the central city if they have unusual needs or want more than common food or drink.

Infrastructure

The Entering Road skirts the residential area of the district, separating it from the Wagon Yards to the south and west. It crosses the Entering Canal at the Entering Bridge and runs to the twin North Bath Bridge and South Bath Bridge, which cross the Opadajacy Canal

The district contains three public cleansing stones, and most inhabitants use those for routine cleaning. Many houses have running water, not common outside of Toresta, and most blocks also have a public fountain where water can be procured. Paved Roads are more or less lit by Everlasting Lanterns, though the Entering Road is the only one that would generally be considered to be well lit.

As for all of the city rainwater is directed from the flat slate roof of the red brick buildings to underground storm drains and to a central cistern system.

Night embers are picked up on Third Day, unless its a holiday.

History

The Entering District was not initially settled when the Founding Families arrived. Before the deepening and widening of the Great Canal the landward end of the Monteplane Peninsula was considered the boundary of Toresta.

When the halflings arrived during the late 30s ATC they settled to the eastward side of the peninsulas narrowest part, in what would become known as the Backbank District. This was the initially halfling village within the dominion of Toresta's governance. There was no finished road at that time. In the 527 ATC the Guardian Canal was dug and the first Entering Bridge built.

By the mid 500s ATC the Opadajacy Canal was completed, connecting the entrance to the Depot to Toresta's southern coast. The Opadajacy bridge (later renamed the North Bath Bridge) was constructed to join Backbank to the Entering District, which still primarily consisted of the Wagon Yard.

The Entering Bathhouse was built in 622 ATC. By 658 ATC there were enough inhabitants in the Entering District to justify the building of another bridge across the Opadajacy Canal. The Opadajacy Bridge was renamed the North Bath Bridge and the new bridge the South Bath Bridge.

The primary wainwright factories continue to be located in Backbank.

Architecture

The buildings in the Entering District are primarily three or four story brick buildings with flat slate gray roofs. Some of them have commercial space on the first floor. About 30% are resident owned, with the owner living on the first floor, unless the first floor contains a commercial space, in which case they live on the second floor. The rest are owned by landlords who live in more prosperous areas of the city.

Geography

The area of the Entering District is very flat, sitting a dozen feet or so above sea level. Fresh water is collected from rainwater, which has always been sufficient for the needs of Toresta's inhabitants.
