Baybluff
Baybluff is a trading town located on the fork where the Barrow River joins the Maga River. One of the larger settlements in the Southern Wildlands, it is home to ~1,200 people of all kinds. It serves as a trading hub for most trade conducted along the Maga, and a gateway to The City. It is perhaps the most multi-cultural town in the wilds, with small representations from many regional communities, though many of these are not permanent fixtures.
With their proximity to and regular trade with The City, Baybluff is one of the few locations in Pyalea that find value in Rivers (the luxury currency of The City). While Rivers don’t hold a set value here, and aren’t the preferred form of payment, they can be bartered with to some success.
The town is run by a group of the most prominent trading organisations, but largely administrated by the town bursar, a position currently and long held by Swaddle Glintcoin (gnome). The three main trading companies are Brockhollow Traders, Air A Lorg, and KRTS.
- Brockhollow Traders - an operation run by three half-elven siblings originating from Brockhollow, a town located down-river towards Hollow Moon Bay.
- Air A Lorg (ear-a-lorog) - Representatives of the dwarvern Tìodhlaiceadh Uamh (tchee-le-ked oo-ahv) a dwarvern society located in the Stonebarrow Mountains to the south, from which the Barrow River flows.
- KRTS - “Crates” spelled with a K, no vowels, all caps. The original family and communal trading venture that put Baybluff on the map, now rebranded after several generations by the latest inheritor, Bluff Bayley V (also a rebrand from his real name, Craggle Gafrump).
Dock and warehouse workers and guards make up the bulk of the workforce, resulting in a pretty tough and no-nonsense population, but also one that likes to enjoy themselves after a days hard work.
“The Maiden”, as it is locally known, is the prime venue for most to relax, feast, and drink. A huge drinking hall, it is named for the stuffed and preserved creature hanging from the ceiling; a 20ft long mermaid, with ghastly facial features (bulging, black, fish eyes, rows of razor needle teeth, slitted nose) and a rust-coloured tail lined with barbs. The creature was reportedly caught in Hollow Moon Bay decades ago by the drinking hall’s most famous patron, Clansky McMurdoch, and transported all the way back up river. McMurdoch, now well into his later years, went out on another of his daring adventures several years ago, never to be heard from again.
Other notable locations and people include the Boardhouse, the town balmer Kit (lagomorph), and a local felidae thief(?) Bless (Blessed by Sky, Sea, and Sand).
