Mount Firebrand
Mount Firebrand is a volcanic mountain located within the Southern Wildlands of Pyalea.
Geography
The mountain marks the southern-most point of the Candide Mountains, one of the two ranges that separates the Southern Wildlands from the northern regions of the continent.
The City is built at the base of the mountain, on the south-east side.
History
Worship
Mount Firebrand has long garnered interest and even devotion from residents of the region. There are records of at least two distinct groups of people present around the founding of The City that presented as practicing some level of faith or worship in the name of the mountain.
While there has never been any definitive connection drawn between the mountain and any deity, it has been theorised that it is the presence of a magical nexus within the mountain that gives these worshippers the impression of something more than a natural volcanic mountain.
The Legend of Firebrand
There is a legend told within The City regarding how the mountain earned its name. In the early days of The City's establishment, a young woman named Elena Firebrand formed a connection to the mountain, recognising it as a site of great power and in possession of a conscious will.
She was not alone in this sense, and acquired several followers, who devoted themselves to her and her message; that the mountain must be revered, recognised, and respected, and in turn "the mountain will provide".
Elena is said to have travelled to the very heart of the volcanic mountain, becoming one with it, and never to return, while her followers became rudderless fanatics seeking to commune with her and the mountain.
They built effigies and monuments, but each burnt to the ground (symbolically and/or literally, depending on the telling). In the end, they ensured that her name and the mountain would live on as one, granting it the name it still bears to this day: Mount Firebrand.
"The mountain will provide."
Eruption
In 2947 PL, Mount Firebrand erupted, bringing untold destruction to the region. The City only survived thanks to The Wall.
Shortly after the eruption, Mount Firebrand returned to dormancy, and exhibited no signs of further activity until recently.
Reawakening
One night in 3591, residents of The City experienced significant earth tremors, and witness smoke rising from the mountain's peak.
